Hey Merlin,

I was wondering if it's okay to upload a router's setting from my old RT n66u settings to my new router; the router is also RT n66u. I'm currently running both routers on .220 stock but I guess I'm uncertain about what the settings actual stores, does the router backup any unique addresses (ie. the hardware's mac address) when it saves the user settings? And would any setting data conflict even in a case - where I saved my settings on .220 firmware version and I'm uploading it to the same type router with the same firmware version?

Yes, there are MACs stored in the settings, so you shouldn't import them to a different router.

I'm not sure to well understand your goal. What is the role of each router?

Thx for the answer merlin.

to huotg:
my first router broke so I sent it back for RMA, and finally today they send me back a replacement router which is working fine now. I had previously backed up the settings on my old router, so I was wondering if the old settings I saved would work with the new RT N66U router I have now.

Merlin, in this specific case, there should be no problem to use the backup ?
The new router is just replacing the previous one and the previous one is no longer there (IMHO).

Not a good idea to mix MACs. That might lead to hard-to-track-down issues down the road.

Just for my information, which MAC addresses do you referred to ? The ones from the devices or the one for the router itself ?

The ones from the router. Try this over telnet/ssh:

Code:
nvram show | grep ":"

Did you try just "nvram show" to see what that outputs? The command works for me (that is, nvram show | grep ":"). Lots of MAC addresses in nvram, anyways *smile*.

I was using Putty, and the command used is exactly the one written above.

Based on your prompt, I would say you weren't connected to your router ;)

:confused:Thanks Marlin. I was completely "offset"... Working great when connected to the router...:o I think I should go to bed!

Now I see all the MAC addresses stored there...
That said I question the concept of backup if I cannot use this backup when I have to replace my device...

Thanks,

GH
