Hi all,
I could use some help settings up a VLAN on my smart switches (16-port D-Link DGS-1100 and an 8-port Cisco SLM2008T), as I don't seem to be able to get it working.
I apologize in advance, as this is going to be a lengthy post
The current setup is this:
In the office there is a modem/router that also provides IP TV (in bridged mode, not routed, so different physical ports for internet and IP TV).
Also located there is the D-Link DGS-1100 switch.
I have a single ethernet cable towards the Cisco SLM2008T in the living room, from where an ethernet cable goes towards the IP TV decoder.
From the DGS-1100 I also have a single cable going up to the second floor, but there is only a dumb switch there.
The idea is this:
Currently the ethernet cable towards the living room is used for IP TV only (so the cable plugs in directly on the modem/router's TV port).
I would like to use the cable as a trunk and have a VLAN for internet (say VLAN 2) and another one for IP TV (say VLAN 3), so that I can connect my mediaplayer and other devices in the living room to the internet via wire.
Diagram:
Modem/router internet port
Modem/router TV port
I hope this diagram is clear enough?
The last port on both switches is the trunk (so p16 on the DGS-1100 to p8 on the SLM2008T).
So I think I should put all ports on both switches in VLAN 2 only, except for:
- port 15 on the DGS-1100 (incoming IP TV cable from the modem/router) => VLAN 3 only
- port 1 on the SLM2008T (outgoing cable to the IP TV decoder) => VLAN 3 only
- port 16 on the DGS-1100 (trunk) => VLAN 2 and 3
- port 8 on the SLM2008T (trunk) => VLAN 2 and 3
How should I go about this? I suppose it’s also best to tag all incoming frames as VLAN 2 (except for the trunk ports (no tagging) and the ports coming from the modem/router for IP TV and going to the IP TV decoder (tag as VLAN 3))?
I have already done some tests but I had issues on my internet connection (connection dropped for a few seconds every few minutes), so I’m starting again from scratch.
I’m no networking genius but I have a basic grasp of things (I think), however this is my first experience with VLANs.
All help is greatly appreciated!
