WAN settings for wifi routers that don't have access-point option?

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to post this in wired or wireless router forum.

I've always wondered what WAN setting to use when I want to use a wifi router as an access point but there is no access point setting. Current example is TP-Link WR1043ND. WAN settings are dynamic, static, PPPOE, bigpond cable, L2TP, PPTP. I have this router connected to my lan through one of it's LAN ports (not the wan port) and I have it's IP set to a LAN IP. I can specify it's LAN IP and subnet mask but there's no place to specifiy a gateway IP.

I have WAN set to PPPOE, the logs are filled with "Timeout waiting for PADO packets". I'd rather not have the logs filled with useless junk like that.

I can access the router's web interface on the local lan using it's IP address, but from outside the lan I can't. I am forwarding a certain port to this router's LAN IP like I do with other devices and I can reach other devices this way but I can't reach this router, I suspect it's because I can't set a gateway IP. Wifi devices that connect to this router have no problems accessing the internet and I can access them remotely from outside the lan (again using dedicated NAT port routing on the main router).

What happens when I set these wifi routers being used as access points to WAN - static IP? What static IP should I use?

If the AIO device (like home wireless router) doesn't have AP Mode - set the WAN to Automatic IP and leave it alone, disable DHCP, make LAN IP part of the Router's subnet, use the LAN ports only after. Remember the LAN IP, you'll need it to log back in and make/change WLAN (wireless) settings.

There is no "automatic" mode. Just the ones I listed.

Dynamic is automatically assigned by upstream DHCP. You won't be using this port, set is as Dynamic and forget about it.

Can I give it a static IP, an un-used LAN IP? I believe in that case I'll be able to set a gateway IP - which would be my primary LAN router. ?

Not worth the trouble it could cause.
