is it true that as long as the cable modem is docsis 3.0, that the 1gb speed will pass on to the ac88u even with a low end cable modem? if not what should i purchase for a cable modem to take advantage of the benefits of the ac88u?

A tip, always more channels is better, even if you do not have 1 Gb and you only had 100 Mbps or less, the most important thing when buying a cable modem should be: That it is supported by your ISP.

If your talking about Comcast you can only get Gig speed tiers if you use a Docsis 3.1 modem they wont provision gig speeds with out one. Can't speak for other cable ISP's. Even on D-3.0 nothing less then 24 x4 and even that wont do 1000 mbps in real world.

i just ordered Next-Generation ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem
let's see how that works. i also called t/s at grande and had a good and useful discussion. turns out we currently have their 300m package. t/s suggested docsis 3.1 for our future enhancements. same as your recommendation.
