Why is it so?

I have a rt ac 88 u who's biggest job is to stream video through a Roku device. Next to it a TV ( not smart tv ) and in front of that a sonos beam .. I have the Roku device and the sonos beam hardwired into the router so I understand how the beam gets the audio for the sonos beam . Now my question, it also plays the audio for the TV but how , it is not plugged into the router at all only the sonos and Roku is .

Doesn't the Roku have the video stream (and therefore the audio stream)? It is simply passing the audio off to the Sonos, correct?

The Roku I understand but the tv is not plugged into the router it just has the Ariel and the power supply. I used to have the sonos plugged into the tv using the little adapter, don't know what it's called but you know the ones that have a red light coming out of the plug and are a real pain to plug into the tv . It's such a pain I gave up trying last time I had to disconnect it and just tried connecting it to the router with an Ethernet cable and it works

Sorry I was not being very clear. When I am streaming video through the Roku I understand how it works but when I swap to view local stations just through the tv with the Roku off I don't understand how it plays audio through the sonos Ps I just checked and forgot that it is connected with a HDMI cable but on its own will not play audio so I am wondering if it somehow passes the audio through the sonos to the router and back again

Does your TV have WiFi? If not, if you disconnect the ethernet connection, do you still get sound from the Sonos with local stations received via the aerial?

No Wi-Fi and no when watching local stations if I don't have either the sonos beam plugged into the router or connected to the tv with the little plug that's a pain to connect, then no sound except through the tv . It must be the HDMI cable acting like a go between you think??

Yes, the HDMI carries sound too. :)

Yes you are right I just unplugged the Ethernet cable and you need to wait a few minutes for it to recognize the change and it plays. Hmmm I feel like a@&ickhead . So I now wonder why they give you the little plugg that's a pain to connect. I'll crawl back into my shell now but thanks as always lol
