Will an Asus router meet my needs, but which one.....?

Hi

I did have a Netgear R7000 router and it was running a fork of AsusWRT-Merlin firmware. I had even overclocked it to 1200mhz and it ran fine.
In fact I hadn't realised how good it was until I sold it when I attempted to go for a pfsense built box for my VPN client needs.
Alas pfsense is simply too much for my weak and feeble brain, really it was just not going to happen.

Fast forward to me then owning a R7800 and to be frank I wish that I had got an Asus router :(
As much as the R7800 is very capable with its 1.7Ghz CPU and my max of 7MB/s download speed I do not like DD-WRT at all.

I did like using the VPN client on the AsusWRT flashed R7000, it just seemed to make sense to me. Creating rules to allow client traffic through the tunnel - easy :)

So whilst there might be a million and one reasons to keep with the R7800 I just want to get back to using an Asus UI and their client support for a VPN.

Please can anyone advise me if the best performance for a VPN client will be achieved on the ASUS RT-AC68U AC1900 or would that improve for future considerations with the far more expensive ASUS RT-AC88U AC3100.....?

I take it that the AC1900p referred to, in other posts, is the one I'm mentioning above, the dual core 1.4ghz and is listed here......

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00FB45SI4/?tag=smallncom-21

.....sorry but I get a little confused by the positioning and model numbers of these routers.

Any help would bee mostly appreciated.

My emphasis is on VPN client throughput and I "only" have around a 68Mbps download speed.

I also note that the Asus RT-AC86U has a dual core 1.8ghz CPU.....

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B075WFL15D/?tag=smallncom-21

perhaps that could offer potentially better performance with a VPN...?

After reading about the potential with this dual core 1.8ghz router I'm tempted to order that one unless there are other considerations...?

Many thanks

Maybe I didn't get it right, but your internet download speed is 7 MB/s?
If that is the case, I would say any Asus made in the last....5 years would suit your needs.

That is 7MB not 7Mb and since I have now got a RT-AC86U with a VPN client I can get closer to 8MB at max :)

I'm downloading now and getting 61.5Mbps which is 7.7MBps. That is much faster than my overclocked Netgear R7000 and faster than my R7800 router could achieve, but not by as much. Still I have, what I consider, to be a much easier UI to enable policy routing etc.

But what made you think that any ASUS router made in the last 5 years could manage a 68Mb / 7MB connection speed with an encrypted VPN client being used....?

Example: N66U. Released in 2011
OpenVPN speed ~ 19-20 MBps (MegaBytes)
RT-AC56U ~ 55-58 MBps (MegaBytes)
You should differentiate between your internet speed and your maximum achieved speed, so as to not create misunderstandings.

Point taken and I'm sorry if I caused confusion :)

I do appreciate your help.
