wired router connected to wireless router

45north

New Around Here
current setup is a US Robotics 8054, it's in the basement in the corner of the house so wireless reception is not great. But otherwise I'm pretty happy with it. Natlist.txt gives me a txt file. There is only room for 12 firewall rules and I would like more.

I read over Higgin's reviews and think that the Linksys BEFXS41 is the best wired router. I especially like the logging features.

First thing I want to do is to configure it so that the lan side is subnet 10.xxx.yyy.??? I assume that I can do that from a Mac?

The second thing is to move the US Robotics upstairs and connect it via 100-B-T cable. Here's the best info I can find:
http://text.dslreports.com/forum/remark,16907434

I want only one subnet and not two (one for each router) can someone give me his opinion if that's possible?

Can I replace the US Robotics upstairs with a Linksys product?

what you could do is put the wired router in the basement and set it as DHCP server with the desired IP range. After that, connect one computer to the 8054, set its IP to an avaialble one outside of the wired router's DHCP assignement range. For example, if the wired router is giving out 192.168.1.100~192.168.1.200, set the 8054's LAN IP to 192.168.1.250.
Now, the important part, disable 8054's DHCP server function. After that, you can connect the 8054's LAN port to the wired rotuer's LAN port and you would be using the 8054 like an wireless access point.

thanks very much for replying subinsu

I followed your advice, here's the thread:

I am very happy with the new setup, the US Robotics wireless router is now out of the basement, reception is improved!

Here's two more questions:
why did US Robotics stop making wireless routers? the USR 8054 is a very good product

Another question, I get asymmetric pings when going through the USR 8054, that is from computer A (in the basement) to computer B (upstairs) I get the following from 24 pings : 1.365, 143.4, 228.6 (min, average, max) in millisecs

but

from computer B to computer A I get the following from 100 pings: 1.367, 2.987, 3.989 (min,average, max)

why are the ping times so different?
