Wireless problems

Maynard65

New Around Here
I have two routers, an Asus RT-N56U (we'll call router "A") and an Asus RT-N66U ("B"). A router is factory while B has Tomato firmware installed.

I take B to Panama with me when I go... last trip I had trouble with the 5.o Ghz band and my laptop. I brought it home and was going to reset the B to default (getting rid of Tomato, which I thought was my problem).

While in the USA, I did some troubleshooting and thought my wireless adapter on laptop was goofed... I bought a new adapter which supports both bands.

With the A router and my laptop with the installed wireless adapter, I see internet speeds of about 80 Mbps on the 5.0 ghz band and 40-50 Mbps on the 2.4 band.

With the A router and my IPAD and/or my laptop with the new external wireless adapter, I see similar results.

With B router and my laptop with the installed wireless adapter, I see internet speeds of about 7-8 Mbps on the 5.0 ghz band and 4-8 Mbps on the 2.4 band.

With the B router and my IPAD, I see about 80 Mbps on the 5.0 ghz band and 7-10 Mbps on the 2.4 band.

With the B router and my laptop with the new external wireless adapter, I see 5-10 Mbps on the 2.4 Ghz band and the 5.0 band won't connect.

I hope all of that makes sense to you, doesn't to me.

I think I want to reset the B router to factory settings (get rid of the tomato firmware)... I'm a rookie at this, is this risky? Just hold in the reset button???.,. help would be appreciated.

Resetting the router to factory settings won't get rid of the Tomato firmware, it'll just set Tomato back to its defaults. If you want to change the firmware you need to flash it. After that you should reset the new firmware to its default settings.

Resetting tomato back to default... since I have not tweaked anything since I had this installed... do me any good?

It seems like this router is malfunctioning somehow... advise?

When things start acting strangely the recommended course of action is usually a reset to defaults. It's also recommended that after doing that you should "forget" the Wi-Fi connection on your client devices and reconnect to them afresh.

There have been more than a few reports of the power adapters needing replacing with those routers (due to their age). That has cured some people's instability problems.

Do you know of a "good" web site that I can follow the instructions as to how to get this back to default?

Also... does it make any difference if I allow the router to just stay plugged in for several hours before I attempt a speed test?

From the instruction manual:
How to restore the system to its default settings?
Press the Reset button at the rear panel of the wireless router for more than five seconds.

No. Just wait about 10 minutes.

Thanks... just for my clarification, after I press and hold this reset button for 5 seconds... Tomato will be gone?
No. Tomato will be reset to it's default settings, which is what you asked.

If you want to load a different firmware then I don't know as I don't use Tomato. Try looking in it's webUI for an option to "upload firmware" (or something similar).
