WNDR4500v2 to PS3

New Around Here
I have a Netgear WNDR4500v2 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit router connected to a Motorola Surfboard modem with Cox Internet, 50mbps. I have my PS3 hard wired to the router but it only shows 14mbps down. I'm trying to understand why I'm not showing faster speeds on the PS3. Only things wirelessly connected are 2 latptops (not always both at the same time), and a Firestick. I know advertised speed is relative, but I've checked using Megapath and it shows I run anywhere from 35-47mbps consistently. Why is the speed my PS3 showing so much slower than what my internet is? Any help is appreciated!!

That is the max speed your PS3 is downloading from the Sony server most likely. I pay for 200Mbps down and get max of 40Mbps down on my PS3 and 70Mbps down on my PS4.

So it has nothing to do with my router, it's the PS3? Mine is older, like 2011, so is there any way to speed it up or is that the speed it's set to have?

Probably more like all the speed it is capable of (they wouldn't put in much more capable hardware just to throttle it).

Gotcha. So more if I wanted more speed, I'd probably have to upgrade to a newer PS3 then? or 4?
That won't help if the speed is being limited by Sony's servers.

There's no difference in performance between the older and newer PS3's. They're smaller, quieter and cooler but network-wise everything is identical.

Edit: I've just checked my PS3 (a newer model) again using its built-in network test and it's showing downloads of ~15Mbps (as usual) despite the fact that it's connected to a 160Mbps line. That's entirely down to Sony's servers and nothing to do with the PS3.

Edit 2: FYI I find that when actually downloading stuff (games, updates, etc.) it's much faster than the network test suggests, but it does vary a lot depending on how busy their network is. Obviously they're going to prioritise their online gaming servers and give a lower priority to background downloads.

Ok. Well I'm using mine primarily to view Playstation Vue cutting the cable cord. Does that mean that my Firestick should be getting better speeds from my router?

Both devices should be more than capable of streaming Vue in HD. I suggest you try both and see which is best.

I have no problem streaming them honestly, what I'm having is that the PS3 is that it will lag like it's looking for connection. Sometimes it will pixelate but most times it clears up quickly. Wondering if some of that is from Sony's servers.

I would have thought that all the Vue apps would be connecting to the same servers irrespective of whether it's on PS3, PS4, Fire, Roku, etc.

If the Fire Stick works I'd use that and leave the PS3 for gaming (It'd be a lot quieter ;))

But make sure the PS3's firmware and App is up to date and that it's not downloading anything in background whilst you're watching Vue.

Ok. Main thing is that I have 50mbps Cox internet but only getting between 12-14 down. Can't figure out why my PS3, which is hardwired through the router, is so much slower.

OK, let's back up a bit.

You said earlier that your Cox connection gives you "35-47mbps consistently". I'm assuming that figure comes from a PC doing some sort of speed test. Correct?

You also said that your PS3 is giving you 12-14Mbs down. How are you measuring that, are you just using the PS3's network test? That's more or less the same figure I get from that test.

You should bear in mind that those two tests are measuring slightly different things and therefore are not necessarily comparable. The first test is to a server optimised to find your maximum download speed. The second test measures the speed from the PlayStation Network, not the rest of the internet.

To determine the true download speed of the PS3 you'd have to use an app comparable to the one on your PC.

EDIT: It might be worth changing the cable between the router and the PS3 just in case it's damaged.

Yes. I used Megapath to measure the speed on my laptop. I don't have a desktop PC. And yes, the speed test I'm using on the PS3 is the one that's in the Network section. Do you have a recommended app I can put on my PS3 to test speed? What's concerning me is that at times Vue will stall and act like it's looking for signal. It sill show network strength, using bars like on your cell, and won't have any highlighted.

Sorry, I don't know any speed test apps for the PS3. All of the browser-based sites I've tried didn't work because they use Flash. But if you search the internet you will find an endless number of posts from people saying that the PS3 and PS4 network test reports much much lower numbers than reality.

I don't use Vue, but in the past I've streamed Netflix in HD on the PS3 without ever having a problem.

Unfortunately, none of this speculation really helps you.:(

PS3 and PS3 Slim are pretty much the same with regards to WAN play... and if I recall, all PS3's supported Gigabit ethernet on the wired port.

The low network benchmark score you might be seeing are more likely due to the source, not your PS3 itself - and bandwidth is not a big deal except for DLC - as long as latency is good, gameplay should be good...

(I'm a PS4 user, not PS3, but my son's PS3 generally worked fine, even when we were quite a bit lower bandwidth connections than I have today - back then it was like 5Mb down/1Mb up...)
