I recently brought a RT-N66U mostly influenced by the reviews and support in this forum and web site.
I have not ventured into upgrading into Merlin's famed firmware yet.
As mentioned in this forums and on the web the firmware update check in the Administration does not bring the latest offerings from ASUS.
Upgraded the firmware from Initial Firmware
3.0.0.4.374_4561
TO
Firmware Upgraded on Installation to
3.0.0.4.378_6117.
So far the new build from ASUS is stable on both 2.4 & 5 bands with guest network active on 2.4.
I live in a crowded wifi space with over 10 networks active where I live and I run the router on TX power of about 40%.
Still the signals are quite stable without any connection drops (RSSI of around -40 and Noise of -90)
on iMac / iPhone / iPad / Android phones.
Was trying to use OpenDNS and dnsomatic and ran into the below issue.
When I selected dnsomatic from DDNS options,
ASUS firmware forces me to enter values in hostname field.
When I try with all.dnsomatic.com or updates.dnsomatic.com
both fail with an error pop up and log shows either
ddns update: invalid hostname: all.dnsomatic.com
or
ddns update: invalid hostname: updates.dnsomatic.com.
The workaround i ran into by accident is to remove all values from the hostname field and enter a space (i.e., press the space bar to fill in a single empty value) and retry again.
Voila now DDNS update to dnsomatic works without any issue.
