WZR-HP-G300NH + WHR-HP-G300N in WDS

Feedback on WZR-HP-G300NH + WHR-HP-G300N in WDS

I'm planning an upgrade of my wireless network to remove the HomePNA currently in use.

To begin with I'll mention the current set-up:
  • 2 Gigabit desktops in the basement, connected with ethernet
  • 1 Cable modem in basement next to desktops
  • 1 2Wire router + HomePNA
  • 1 Netgear WGR614 v6 AP
  • 2 802.11g Laptops
  • 1 802.11n Macbook (used infrequently)
  • 1 100Mbps linux desktop on 2nd floor*
*Note: Was connected with 2Wire USB PC Port (ie USB - > HomePNA). Device doesn't work on linux. I'd need to mess around with NDISWrapper to get it to work.

Now, I wanted to replace the 2wire router + Netgear with a Buffallo WZR-HP-G300NH. And place a WHR-HP-G300N on the 2nd floor acting as an access point for the desktop and a WDS repeater. The WHR-HP-G300N would be almost directly above the Buffallo WZR-HP-G300NH.

Now, I choose this combination as both routers are N capable. They both will have DD-WRT support (in the future). And they are both high-powered, allowing for adequate coverage.

I feel that any router purchase should be N capable, as N is only going to be more prevalent as time goes on.

Ideally, I'd get two simultaneous Dual-Band router, and WDS on one radio and broadcast on the others, but that would be too expensive of a solution. I considered getting 2x ESR-7750, but due to it's poor range I didn't consider it a option. I figured WDS would not work as well using 2x ESR-7750.

Now, I guess my only questions are are my assumptions on the ESR-7750 correct, ie not enough range for WDS?

Are the two Buffallo routers a good match and the best available option? One other thing, would it be better to run the Buffallos in mixed mode (g/n) or only g?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

They work in WDS together. See my post over in Gen Wirless about the WZR-HP-G300NH and WDS. Screenshots are included there.

This is the guide I used. I haven't really done any tests. Performance has been adequate.

EDIT: and by adequate, I mean great. Completely serves my needs.
