WIFI bad range on builds afer RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.32_0

I tried all versions from RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.32_0 to RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.39_0-em, only RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.32_0 have good WIFI range. All versions after RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.32_0 has very poor WIFI range. After all upgrades did restore to default and reconfigured all settings. Tried to set TX power to maximum. Also when I check signal strength close to router it is lower than in version RT-N66U_3.0.0.4_374.32_0.
last EN mode from v39 with SDK6 not helped at all.
Any Idea ? May be Need to enable some setting in 39_0-em to resolve problem ?

I'm running 39.0-em on my N66U and the range and signal strength is great (2 story 1600 sq ft house). The 5Ghz signal with 39.0-em is great, a solid 4-5 bars all over the house.

Same here - same version, and mine is rock solid - I use as an AP and AC68 as my router - in many cases my roaming devices even choose the N66 over my AC68 when considerably closer to the 68! I'm sure there are all sorts of possible reasons, but I've watched the N66 through a number of firmware upgrades now, and this just seems far and away the strongest. I'll be hesitent to change when 40.0-em comes along! (But probably will anyway!) :)

I can't. Tim doesn't allow clickable URLs in signatures as spammers were abusing this in the past, so I had to remove my own clickable links.

I see. Can you put non-clickable URLs there?

Another idea: I am sure you can put clickable URL-s in the body of the post. Putting it in announcement post for new release would be very helpful too.

Dude, just do like most of us I'm sure do. Bookmark the site where Merlin uploads his firmware.
What's the big deal?

I'm not clear if the past firmware versions that you tried were the "-sdk5" versions or not? Those are the ones that will perform well for you, on the RT-N66U. If the version string doesn't end in "-em" as the newer ones do, then you want to use the versions that end in "-sdk5" from the "SDK5 Driver" folder at the download site. As I don't see "-sdk5" in the version strings in your posting, I'm wondering if those are the ones that you used, or not?

If you didn't use the "-sdk5" firmware versions, give those a try and they should be better for you.

Hey Merlin -
374.39 is acting great so far except this bug which i was not able to do in previous versions.

Reboot router.
Connect to the network wirelessly as soon as possible or via wired connection.
Keep trying to load the router's address as it's booting. There is a point in the boot sequence where if you watch a wired connection, it will connect, disconnect for just a second and then connect again. If you are trying to load it in the browser right at that point you'll go straight to the recovery mode firmware upload screen.

3.0.0.4_374_4422

Hello RMerlin,

I know I keep bringing this issue up concerning my 68u, but I am still trying to resolve.

I am still having the issue with my "Client Status" list not being able to refresh. It is my pc running WHS 2011 that hangs it up. If I disconnect the client or shut it down, it will refresh.

I have been doing some more trial and error. When I load Asus firmware all was well with client refresh, until now. I have loaded the latest Asus firmware 3.0.0.4_374_4422 and I have the exact problem of the client list not refreshing as I do when I have one of your firmware's loaded.

I am just wondering if you know what was changed/added in the Asus .4422 firmware that is causing this?

That's not a bug, that's simply you trying to connect to a router that's still in the process of booting. Just let it finish its boot sequence.

Asus switched their networkmap code to mine, as it fixed a lot of issues. WHS seems to be doing something naughty with its DHCP lease or using an invalid hostname, as it's the only thing I heard reported as having troubles with this new code (this new networkmap code will now retrieve the device's hostname through its lease rather than just report the Netbios name like it previously did).

Have you tried giving the WHS client a static IP address (reserved outside of the DHCP pool)? I would set the same static address on the WHS server, itself, of course.

Unfortunately I don't think I could set that up without direction. Not very tech savvy.

Whs is not the problem i have Whs V1 (2003) and V2 (2011) on my network and dont experience the same problem you have.
so your problem might be the netcard your whs server is using as its not whs itself

I had a 66u prior to my 68u running Merlin firmware and didn't have this issue. I was running .374.35-2 up to middle of last November then purchased 68u. As soon as I set up the 68u it hasn't worked. I have tried installing a network card and disabling onboard LAN. No go.

Ok I have just booted the WHS2011 in safe mode with networking. I am now able to refresh client list!

Any thoughts?

Rt-n66u

Fixed my flakey router problem with 374.38_2, probably does not have anything to do with firmware version. All started when upgrading from an older firmware prior to the change log stating set to default special requirements etc. Upgraded firmware since but still strange problems. For others insight, not sure if of any help.

reset to default 30/30/30 mtd-erase -d nvram reboot and up graded firmware
reset to defaults 30/30/30 mtd-erase -d nvram reboot
set up from scratch and after enabling jffs and restoring autoexecs I went to the tools command to ensure all started when I typed "n" the buffer displays netstat -ln

How can the buffer from a previous version be there after the reset and firmware upgrade?

Back to square one

reset to defaults wps 30/30/30 mtd-erase -d nvram reboot and this time straight for cmd tool buffer

Still there

After a couple reset to defaults wps 30/30/30 mtd-erase -d nvram reboot it was gone (no more buffer) and then I set up all from scratch.

Well all has been working wonderfully for 2 weeks now, not one complaint.

I have no idea why the tools cmd buffer would remain after numerous reset to defaults, possible me doing something wrong? 5 times? How can you go wrong with a nv command? I believe their is no factory default if the command buffer is remembered?

Router question

Is it easy to pack the curl command into the firmware?

Regards

If you have entware installed, curl is a one command install.
