Based on your experience or readings, what is "the best" available high end router with USB3 ports on it ?

Thanks,

There was another topic the other day about USB 3.0 on a router and the concensus was that there is no use with 3.0 on most routers.

The router hardware won't be able to utilize the speed, usually routers won't even max out USB 2.0 devices. Also USB 3.0 seems to interfere with 2,4 GHz WiFi.

Amped Wireless Has announced that they will have USB3.0 802.11ac adapters (at CES). USB3 will be able to take full advantage of the 802.11ac speeds.

They may have that on thier routers for USB sharing but I'm not quite sure. I would expect that though.

I don't see why routers would not max out USB2 devices ?

USB 2.0 is 480 Mbit/s as far as I know, how many routers even have that throughput WAN-LAN? If they could handle it on USB, how come they don't handle it on WAN/LAN transfers?

not a wirespeed issue. The use of the file system overhead for a USB drive, especially NTFS rather than a Linux file system, limits the transfer speeds. Takes much more CPU power than in a typical router to cope.

One thing I know is that I have a better throughput when using my NAS (a WD MyBookLive) than when using my USB drive connected to the RT-N66U.

So if a wifi router is only good for small use of an external hard drive, then how do you suggest I make my USB 3.0 external hard drive visible tot he rest of my home network (without leaving it plugged into my desk top PC).?

Another thought on USB 3.0 is that it interferes with one of the bands... cant remember if it is the 2.4ghz or 5ghz one but reviews concerning the N65u (ASUS's refresh of the famed n56u) point to a issue with USB 3.0 cables causing interference. Using a shielded cables helps, but doesn’t seem to completely solve the issues.

I will post a little blurp on this when I get mine in the mail...... there should be other information available on this issue via the forums. Not certain if this just affects ASUS 65u routers or if all usb 3.0 enabled routers have issues

Use a NAS. Many have USB 3.0 ports and you can connect USB 3.0 hard drives to them. They will share files much faster than a router.

Of course you can also plug a USB 3.0 drive into a USB 2.0 socket. On a router it may not make much of a difference in speed since it's so CPU-constrained. On a NAS or a PC it will slow it down, but it will still work fine.

It's USB 3.0 and 2.4 GHz and yes, it's all USB 3.0 devices unless proper shielding is built in. Most manufacturers haven't properly addressed it yet.

Intel has a whitepaper on it:
