Hello.
I have an internet connection by L2TP (Russian provider - BeeLine Moscow).
Today i received a message, when i was trying to open web page: <router page>\error_page.htm?flag=2

Connection was restored after reconnecting at Apr 21 13:08:18 (no auto-reconnect, more than 2 hours passed).
There is some interesting part of logfile:

Beeline's service is... weird. Don't know any other ISP with a similar setup.

I suspect it might be a problem with your modem or your Internet service however:

Code:
Apr 21 18:03:36 /usr/sbin/l2tpd[1532]: Too many retransmissions on tunnel (60054/7018); closing down

Hard to tell as I have no experience with those tunneled Internet services. Sorry.

I had been using a Tomato firmware before. There was no problem with "retransmissons".
There was only one problem: 1/2 of WiFi speed in comparison with your firmware.

I looked for answer in internet - no answers, just some ideas about Torrent.
I have set restriction for upload in UTorrent. Let's see.

There are other problems:
1. I have freezes for 10-30 seconds in web-interface. Sometimes it freeze until rebooting.
2. No auto-connect to l2tp after hard-reboot (AC out and in after web-interface freeze).
3. I have MTU 1428 (discovered by ping) on my PC. I can't find MTU setting in firmware (1460 is recommended by Beeline).

ip link list:
Code:
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,MULTICAST,UP,10000> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue
    link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,10000> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000
    link/ether bc:ae:c5:c2:f3:03 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,10000> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000
    link/ether bc:ae:c5:c2:f3:03 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
4: vlan1@eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,10000> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue
    link/ether bc:ae:c5:c2:f3:03 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
5: br0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,10000> mtu 1500 qdisc noqueue
    link/ether bc:ae:c5:c2:f3:03 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
7: ppp0: <POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST,UP,10000> mtu 1456 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 3
    link/ppp

I had used command "/sbin/ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1460 up" within telnet to get mtu 1460.
What can i do with freezes and no reconnecting after reboot?

Thank you, i know about "c" option.
Maybe that was a bad illustration, but i have freezes like a "ping without c" after confirming some firmware options (not for all, of course).
I didn't see that kind of freezes nor in Tomato nor in RT-N16-1.9.2.7-rtn-rxxx.

Can't do anything...

No internet devices was using. All PC, laptops were in shutdown mode.
12:57:08 - another one disconnect.
However, there was reconnect in 3 minutes.
MTU 1456 at ppp0 was restored after reconnect (how can i save it?).

------
I am going to use 3.0.0.4_354.28-Beta1. Maybe it is a clue to my situation.
I made install, restore factory settings, restore my settings, reboot.
MTU is 1460, it is interesting, hope this would be permanent.

I have the same provider. Sometimes, maybe once in two months, I have similar lines in my log. It seems, BeeLine is doing something with their setup in the evening, and in the morning it could be fine again.

It's ok, but i have same line every day. Sometimes 2 times during one day.
And, what's so bad, router can't reconnect after this.
What can i do?

Your router isn't recommended. I heard this already many times :(

Have you tried asking on the Beeline support forums? I know there are quite a few users with RT-N66U on their service. They might have suggestions for you to try.

Hello Merlin! Thanks for all your hard work, we really appreciate it!

I have the same issue with the Beeline ISP on my RT-N66U, and haven't found a solution yet.

For most of the time the L2TP connection is stable (my personal record is 16 days), but sometimes after disconnection the router wouldn't reconnect. For example, this morning the connection was lost and the system log looked like this:
Code:

Apr 26 18:24:15 ddns: ddns update ok

As you can see, it just wouldn't even try to reconnect and stopped after 1000+ messages about an unknown tunnel. After I came home I had to manually reconnect.

My WAN settings are:
Connection type: L2TP
Additional pppd options: lcp-echo-adaptive maxfail 0
All other settings are set to default values.

If you could, please, look at the source code around the error message about an unknown tunnel, maybe that will spill some light on our problem.

Thank you once more!

Hello Merlin! Thanks for all your hard work, we really appreciate it!

I have the same issue with the Beeline ISP on my RT-N66U, and haven't found a solution yet.

As I mentioned, there isn't much I can do, since I have no way of reproducing the weird setup Beeline uses for their service, sorry. You will have to hope that Asus has some devs in Russia who can work on this and fix it in the original firmware.

MerliN_RT-N16_3.0.0.4_354.28-Beta1
I have installed it with original Router Firmware Restoration Utility.
All is ok for now. Uptime is 4 days.

Another question...
Do you know why wifi speed with your firmware is 2x better than speed on tomato or rtn-r5051? This is miracle :)

Must be different default settings. Tomato uses the same driver as Asus uses in firmware 3.0.0.4.220. 354.28 Beta does use a much newer driver, however it's still in beta, and it has a few issues that Asus are still working on. Still, I doubt it would explain a major performance difference.

Same settings. Only change that i did at all firmwares - change channel to 13.

I was so happy... But 1 hour ago:
Code:
Jan 1 04:00:54 /usr/sbin/l2tpd[520]: Too many retransmissions on tunnel (45002/0); closing down
Jan 1 04:01:04 /usr/sbin/l2tpd[520]: tunnel_establish: gethostbyname failed for 'tp.internet.beeline.ru'
Jan 1 04:01:14 /usr/sbin/l2tpd[520]: tunnel_establish: gethostbyname failed for 'tp.internet.beeline.ru'

I will try RT-N16_3.0.0.4_354.27-BETA1b.

Is it possible that Tomato defaults to 20 MHz, but Asus defaults to 20/40 MHz? That would explain the doubling of wireless performance if you use the default settings.

I was trying 20Mhz/40Mhz. I have good wifi speed with 20Mhz too.

Forgot to say... I have good speed of wifi with RT-N16_3.0.0.4_270.26b too.
Some kind of magic is in your firmwares default settings. It's very interesting.
