Dual WAN *INCOMING* load balancing

Hi,

I need help! We are doing a log of downloading of files/data here, so we often max out our ISP connection. So, we got a 2nd ISP connection (different carrier), and want to get some device that will balance all this downloading across the two internet connections.

I read about LInksys RV042, the Peplinks, Netgear FVS336, etc.

Seems they all can do OUTGOING load balance just fine. But they don't say anything about INCOMING!

(Actually Peplink site does pretty much say that their model 20L and 30 units won't do incoming load balance, you have to go up to the $895 model 210, it seems, to get that.)

Am I completely wrong about this? Please help. What device do I need?

try out Zeroshell, an OpenSource Firewall and Layer 7 Proxy Filter : http://www.zeroshell.net/eng/ with an Alix Board: http://www.alix-board.de/produkte/alix2d13.html and a 1GB CompactFlash-Card or with a old PC ( > Pentium 3 / 1Ghz - 512 MB RAM ).
This Firewall can do MLPPP ( http://www.bandwidth.com/wiki/article/MLPPP ), this is what you want :)

Hi jkoerner,

unless you have any hosted services that you want to give load balancing this should work okey.

Since each of your WAN links has it's own IP.
When you download a file you send a request to a server. The server will see the IP of the WAN link your request came from and reply to that.

So as long as the request going out is spread between the WAN links you will get some load balancing. This is limited but may be enough for your requirements, since it sound like all your downloads are started/requested from the LAN.

Some routers will allow you to control the outgoing requests in more detail using policy routes , like a Zywall USG 100 (disclosure, I work for Zyxel).

well your isp needs to support mlppp for that.. for inbound loadbalancing this is absolutely necessary. if the isp doesnt support it, you are screwed.

for example i know of no bigger isp here in germany that supports this. maybe there are some small ones that do.
 
You're right BEISSER if you want to use both lines as one global line with MLPPP.
But if you need failover, the ISP should'nt be identically.

But two lines can be used as an addition of bandwidth, you know what i mean ?

First all packets go trough the first line, and within reaching the limit, the second is used. If the first line goes down, the second stays on without any failover time.
No User could take all the bandwidth - and HTTP traffic are only small packets^^
Nearly the same as multipathing ...

You can't do bonding over WAN without you ISP :)
Otherwise, the throughput will be dragged down by the slower link, if the ISP don't support that.
