New Around Here
Hi,

I use a VDSL connection in the UK and use a vdsl modem with originally my asus rt-ac87u behind it which was runing the latest release (non beta) of merlin. My router has a fixed ip from the ISP and I monitor this via a couple of external latency/ping monitors and up till the start of the month everything seemed normal. The 87U had been in place for some time and never had issues with ping time outs or latency problems when external monitors are checking my IP.

At the start of the month the external monitors started to display continual packet loss even though nothing had changed. I tried different modems first but the issues continued. I then tried a different asus router being an RT-AC88U (new) but this has also suffered the same problem. At times I can loss the internet completely up to 10 or 20 minutes even though the modem stays in sync.

I re-instated the ISP supplied router still connected to my vdsl modem and there has been no issues with latency loss during the 18 hours I tested it or ping time out. I had all the comms checked both by my ISP and the operator of my line, replaced patch leads etc but all to no avail.

I just can't seem to figure out why this started when all was fine before, perhaps I am missing some settings in merlin that would help this.

I have all the graphs which show the sessions dropping or ping time outs and my original graphs from when this just wasn't a problem. When I lose the net all together - it will re-establish by itself and there is no re-sync so the modem stays connected all the time.

I still have the AC88U in place so any tips or tricks worth trying would be most appreciated as I just can't get to the bottom of it. Just to clarify when I use the ISP supplied router connected to the original vdsl modem I was using on the 87u there doesn't seem to be an issue.

Many thanks for taking the time to read. example of the issues I am seeing attached, the first graph is from the 88u and the second file between the red sections is the ISP router which seems pretty normal. I use merlin because it supports the WAN login settings my ISP needs where as Asus stock firmware does not. cheers

Which ISP ?

Does the firewall log show something like " failed to respond to 10 pings .... "

Does the line actually drop?

SKY (VDSL) - specific ISP info needs to be supplied in the wan information or you don't get a session.

no the line never drops, I also monitor the modem which uploads to the net. The data stops being sent though until things return and there is no re-sync indicator either. I am at work now and its just done it again and is currently not responding to pings and I can't VPN in either so the external monitors are showing it being offline. I have called home just to check and the router is still showing normal white light and the vdsl modem is still connected as normal.

Data from one of the external ping monitors.

Probably not the same issue then. I am with UNO , it's BTW supplied FTTC.

I have recently seen some very odd line drops, session disconnects and blocks of increased latency where pings double for anywhere fro 10 - 45 minutes.

well with sky its fttc and on btw so I am told so who knows. The sky router seemed ok the other day so its all very odd, its still showing down since 13:29pm...
