Just hooked up the asus to replace my e4200. Latest bios (205). Obs:

1. better coverage in 2.4g than the e4200 in a 2400 sq ft home
2. same bandwidth
3. better web interface
4. WORSE ping (avg of 48 compared to 24).

Haven't tried the usb thing yet.

How is your ping that bad? I have 1-2ms over my wifi. You should be very far away from the router.

The asus routers don't back down when they are firmly set to 40Mhz. The intel adapters don't back down when fat channel intolerant is disabled. I have 6 networks around me (2.4GHz) that cover all channels a few times and still use 40Mhz triple stream and push 20-22MB/s over it. It's about selecting your channels to be on top of the weakest base stations (the ones that are most far away) so you interfere with each other the least. This is my spectrum in the picture below:

If that's working out for you, whatever floats your boat. If your RSSI is -25 dBm, you're probably well within the radius of a 15' ethernet cable as well. I don't have any 3x3:3 clients that only run on 2.4ghz and have no 5ghz radio in them. 2.4ghz for me is my longer range and legacy band, I need to support a couple G only devices on it, I can't (and have no need to) run it in N only mode.

Did I miss the post where you told us what you are pinging? And if you're on wifi what your signal stats are (freq band, RSSI, surrounding traffic etc)

1. pc wired: pings ~24 on both routers
2. iphone using speedtest app pings ~24 on e4200 and 40-60 on asus
3. pc on netgear wnd4100 wireless adapter is ~24 on both.

So, my iphone has more latency w/ the asus, for reasons that escape me. Everything else is at it should be.

Most of the speedtests (at least the http://www.speedtest.net/ (Okala) one for desktop and iOS) has a pretty handy share function for posting results to a board like this. Only thing else that'd be helpful to know (if you're posting from your iPhone for example) would be your RSSI, but that's kinda difficult actually to post from an iphone, easier stat to dig up on your desktop & laptops.

I can pull a sub 20ms ping from most anywhere indoors on 5ghz to my iOS device, here's a screenshot of some recent tests to nearby server

That is not a reliable measurement. Ping your router to see your real wireless ping. Wireless is a half-duplex connection with a lot higher packet drop rate than lan. The more load you put on the wi-fi, the higher your ping will get. Another possible issue is that your internet might actually be faster than your wifi, which is my situation when I don't use ac. The max speed will never be completely comparable to lan because of the packet drops which reduce the speed of the tcp connections.

By the way, does anyone know if the netgear r7000 has an interface demo site too? I'd love to compare the two.

They either pulled it, or it hasn't been fully propagated to all mirrors yet. Just give them some time.

I'm thinking 217 was pulled.. I had some serious issues with being locked out of both the web ui and telnet/ssh...and clients losing internet access... The wireless connection was up, and it seemed like there was a pppoe link (status lights were correct on the DSL modem,)but you couldn't connect anywhere....(I can't load my webpage or run apps I heard the family cry) (Did I mention this started happening roughly every half hour for 2 1/2 to 3 hours?) Only "fix" was to reboot the router... Downgraded to 205 and haven't had the problem since... Though there's some bugs with the "night mode" and the button... The modem lights will come back on after the modem reboots, regardless of the buttons state (its a spring loaded button)... or just randomly if you change certain settings.. Hoping they put out a fix this week... New model year syndrome hits tech devices too sometimes...

I've been using the AC68U as an access point with no problems with .205 firmware at all. I'm on FIOS in NYC and get insane speeds on this router. Even my neighbor two apartments down can get a great signal from it.

New to AC68U

Just picked it up yesterday and replaced my 66U. Pretty much got it because it's latest and dual-core CPU. Not seeing huge improvements but I'm not using for AC either. I do notice though that the interface is slower loading than 66U, and once loaded the status section on right side of the screen takes even longer to load (on both Chrome and IE).

I also notice that I get an IP/port message saying it's been updated after any major router changes, and tells me to disconnect from wireless and reconnect (versus a page refresh and interface loads automatically).

And might be a fluke, but I disabled IPv6 advertising and my 2.4ghz wireless stopped working but 5ghz was fine. I had to hard reboot the router to get 2.4ghz to work again. Similarly when configuring the router for the first time yesterday, I got that same IP/port message and had to reboot router before I could continue configuring it.

And while it might be my imagination, my 2.4ghz client seems slower since I disabled ipv6 advertising (shouldn't make a difference I would think); since the basic setting for ipv6 is set to Disable. Will re-enable advertising, and try from there.

Running 3.0.0.4.374_158 which seems to be the latest. Sort of missing the 66U at this point.

Below is the message I get, often (and never on 66U):
Settings have been updated. Web page will now refresh.

To access the settings of RT-AC68U, reconnect to the wireless network and use the updated IP address and port number.

UPDATE: Just reset advertisting back to enabled and my 2.4ghz client is fast again. VERY odd.

Latest is 3.0.0.4.374.205, you have to manually download it from Asus's website. A newer version should be released either this week or next one, which will address the USB performance issues amongst other things.

I've had it running for 4 days without reboot now. 5ghz and 2.4 are rock solid.... I've got a little over 30 devices connected, including 4 full HD security cameras that haven't had a dip in signal during that period.


Using inssider on a laptop and WIFI Analyzer, I still see slightly better signals on 2.4, and about 10% better on 5.
