Synology just introduced the 8-bay DS1817 and 5-bay DS1517 desktop NAS, delivering products for businesses and professionals with growing needs. Both Value line NAS use Annapurna Labs Alpine AL-314 quad-core 1.7 GHz processors, run Synology’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) 6.1 operating system, and support Synology High Availability (SHA) that maximizes uptime using clustered servers.

The DS1817 comes with 4 GB DDR3L RAM, but is expandable to 8 GB. Interface-wise, the 8-bay NAS has two GbE ports and two 10 GbE ports, with the latter being ideal for businesses that are transitioning to faster Ethernet networking. Also included are two USB 3.0 ports and 2 eSATA ports. Storage on the DS1817 is expandable to 180 TB when used with two 5-bay DX517 expansion units and 10 TB drives. Lastly, the DS1817 is storage-certified for virtualization products like VMware, Citrix and MS Hyper-V.

The smaller 5-port DS1517 comes with 2 GB DDR3L memory, four GbE ports, two USB 3.0 and two eSATA ports. The DS1517’s storage is also expandable up to 150 TB when used with two of Synology’s DX517 units.

Both, the DS1817 and DS1517, are backed by limited 3-year warranty, with an optional 5-year extended warranty available for longer term coverage. Pricing for the Value NAS products was not available at this time.
