I have noe decided to give up the idea of setting up thr Asus router as a VPN router and to give up the idea of using the router with a USB drive. I will now use the Asus router basically as a second router and to buy a dedicate NAS. Thanks for all you help.

I have an Asus RT-AC68U router with Asus-merlin firmware running a 4TB, USB 3.0 hard drive. The hard drive has its own power supply. Is there any way I can get the USB drive to effectively go to sleep when it has not been used for a some time?
