ADSL 2+ Modem/Router for ASUS RT-N66U

Hi

I just bought an Asus RT-N66U. I'm currently using my ISP's stock modem/router (Pirelli DRG A223G). It's my second Pirelli in less than a month. This piece of crap, not only is unreliable but also comes with many features locked. I can't set it to bridge mode, configure DHCP, etc.

I want to buy a modem/router to go with my ASUS. Can anyone advise a cheap and reliable, easy to configure router that can be used as ADSL 2+ modem only with my the N66U?

I was using a Thompson ST516 back when I had DSL. It's what we also sell to our own DSL customers, they're pretty reliable.

I've seen that thread but a lot of reviews on Amazon say it has a tendency to overheat.

TP-Link are very good value for money.
Also using broadcom DSL chipset which are very reliable and handle very well noisy lines...

My choice would be for any broadcom based DSL modems...

Another excellent choice, one that will likely give you higher sync speed than most, yet quite reliable are the Trendchip based modem such as the WebExcel AL-2108

TP-Link and WebExcel in m y experience are rock solid.

I'd stay away from TI based DSL modem such as the DLink... They often lock up for no apparent reason when the line is noisy and require a power cycle...

Amazon , reviewer probably has the modem mounted on their toaster oven .
The modem has very good ventilation , better than most , don't see heat as a problem . So far 6 months and have yet to have a problem , maybe I'm just lucky

Or in a drawer...there's always a finite chance of getting a defective unit when you buy anything. And a good chance of a user or two not understanding how to use it. From the reviews I see of this modem on Amazon, I'd have no problem buying and trying it out.

Also, a lot of people expect electronics to always run cool. Things is, many modern devices have pretty advanced processors. The presence of heat is not a sign of a problem - in most case it's perfectly normal.

The Draytek range rock in my opinion - I use them for lots of different customers and locations. The V120 is simple but gets the job done - especially if you want to set up a true direct onto the internet connection (e.g. for a firewall) or just like KISS setups.

The high-end multi-WAN models are truly awesome (e.g. the 2830 for DSL or the 2920 for ethernet) and the IPv6 updates are great news. I can't wait to get mine updated and tested with my Hurricane Electric tunnel broker account (alas my ISP is a no-show for IPv6 currently).

Now you got me interested in the Draytek. It is locally available, contrary to the TP-Link. Do you use the RT-N66U with it?

Yes, I have a RT-N66U behind the DrayTek 120 using Tomato custom FW (Shibby 0.95 build) as opposed to the stock FW.

Is it a requirement tu use a custom firmware to have this configuration working? I currently own an Asus RT-N66U and I'm seriously considering to buy a DrayTek 120 and plug on it, but I don't want to change the stock firmware on any of the devices. Could someone please confirm if this is a working configuration, or even better if someone is actually running with such configuration with zero touch on firmware?
