New Around Here
Let me start by saying I am not an expert so please excuse my non-technical terminology.
I am hoping for some advice on how to solve my networking issues. I live in Mexico as an expat and need a VPN (StrongVPN is my provider which uses OpenVPN). I currently have a router (Netgear WNR3500L) that is connected via ethernet to my local ISP-provided cable modem (a Cisco DPC 2320) and the Netgear has pre-loaded VPN software so when any device connects to it, it is using the VPN. However, the VPN is obviously much slower and the range on the Netgear doesn't reach very far. The local internet (Cisco) is quite fast ~100mbps but same problem, the range is limited.
So the bottom line is I need an SSID for my devices that need the VPN (albeit it will be slower) and an SSID for those that just need the speed. Problem is not all of my devices can connect at 5ghz (I think some of my tablets/phones don't have 5ghz capability). On both SSIDs, I stream HD, game, and do other intensive things.
I've tried several iterations of range extenders and they really haven't done the trick either.
Budget isn't an issue for me as I'm willing to spend the money to get this resolved.
After doing a bunch of research, what I understand my options to be are:
Do I buy two new routers, one for my local internet and one for my VPN that have better range? If so, which ones?
Do I buy a system like EERO for my whole apartment, then just connect the vpn router to the ethernet port on the satellites where I need VPN access?
Welcome any thoughts/comments/suggestions. Thank you!
