Wireless technology is finicky for sure.

Here is my issues.

I have 2 devices I want using my 5ghz band. One is a N device, other is AC.

If I use 80mhz channel or 20/40/80mhz channel the N device has throughput barely above 0 and the connection speed hovers between 13-21mbps. Its a galaxy S3 phone.

If I use fixed 40mhz on any channel apart from 36, the N device connects and stays at 150mbps and has normal throughput. but I am in this mode strangling my AC device with the smaller width channel.

Solution? If its move the phone to the 2.4ghz band then it half defeat's the purpose of me investing in a dual band router.

Ok I think but cant be 100% sure yet that the phone may be the problem, did some digging and it seems 80mhz AC channels use the entire 5ghz frequency range as it only has 4 channels. Since the phone refused to work on channel 36, that it seems prevents a 80mhz channel from working, of course it doesnt explain why I still had the problem on 20/40/80mhz mode which should adapt. I am the only one on the 5ghz frequency no other wifi networks.

After changing the rom on the phone, it can use channel 36, and now also works on 80mhz mode. Although I havent done a speedtest yet I am assuming channel 36 is ojk as the rom is reporting a 150mbit connection.

Talk to the developer who built your custom ROM and what ever driver/tweaks he is using for S3 ROM.

In the mean time, for testing purposes, install a factory default ROM on your S3.

Done some diagnosing.

All 4.1.x based samsung roms exhibit the problem, including official samsung roms. The factory default 4.0 rom does not have the problem but that of course auto updates to 4.1.2. The problem is the phone cannot use channel 36. This I assume stops 80mhz from working as that uses all 4 channels, but doesnt explain why it doesnt work in 20/40/80 mode as I would expect the rotuer to auto fallback to 40mhz?

4.3 samsung rom the bug is fixed.
4.4 AOP kitkat also works fine.

So basically android 4.1.2 seems to have a nasty 5ghz bug on the s3.

I haven't had the issue of my n clients not being able to connect to the router set to 80. So it does fall back, but I guess it might be falling back to the channel your GS3 doesn't support. Are you in an area where both ranges of 5Ghz are available? I would say try channels 149-165, but I'm assuming you would have if you could. I guess you could try all of the channels as the primary one and see if any of the settings lead to a fallback that doesn't include channel 36.
