Today several of my AI Mesh nodes (2x RT-AC68U and 2x AC-1900) lost connectivity to the Main GT-AC5300 network. I restarted the entire network including the Verizon LTE modem they attach to and they upon doing so, I found the main GT-AC5300 had been reset to factory defaults. I never did this! Has anyone else had this happen to them today? Was their an update that did this?

I don't understand the log entries but I do have them in case something weird happens like this. Maybe someone with a brain can interpret the below info and tell me if something happened to cause this.

I'm setting everything up again from scratch, but this is a time waster after a long day of work and I'd like to know what caused it.

I hope everyone is doing well and thanks in advance to anyone willing to look.

I hope you did a full reset yourself after flashing the latest firmware onto the router before setting it up again (even if it is the same firmware version available, flash/upgrade it again).

The GT-AC5300 may be showing hardware issues, consider a replacement if a fully reset router/network doesn't fix this issue permanently.

If you're using 5-8 of the LAN ports, you may want to try using the router without using those ports.

Thanks for the tips. Judging by the lack of responses here, I can only assume this issue was isolated to me. I'm am currently only using 3 of the router's ethernet ports, but that could change. I've used up to 7 at one time previously before moving and never noted any problems. I see others had issues with the ports of their GT-5300 but the issues appear to be isolated and not wide-spread, though I didn't thorough research this. Is there something I need to be aware of if using too many of the ports?

Take care...

If using port 5-8 work well well in your setup, then there is nothing to be concerned about, of course.

However, I haven't seen an Asus 8 Port (LAN) router that remains stable for its lifetime. The main issue is that the 8 ports are really two separate switches, and the way they are connected together, they are not the most robust configuration possible.

A $10 or $20 5 or 8 Port switch plugged into ports 1-4 solves that issue.

Also, note that the router's power supply may be going south on you. It may be worthwhile to test with a new or known/good power adaptor (same plug, Voltage, and equal or higher Amperage specifications).

Knowing what I know though (performance difference between AC and AX routers), I would be more inclined to consider a new AX class router instead.

Current Order of Recommended Routers Late 2021

Many thanks L&LD, I really appreciate that additional info. I'm a huge fan of Asus routers. Been using and installing them for well over 10 years after testing most other brands and finding they suck compared to Asus. I'll take that advice and check on the power supply. I like this router and it's been good to me for the past 3 or so years. Hoping it will last.

Have a good week and thanks again,
Mike

I have aimesh with main RT-AC68U and 2 RT-AC68U nodes + 2 Zen Wifi CD6 (ac1500) nodes. Few days ago I noticed, that one CD6 node lost connectivity and didnt work even after reboot. I have tried it several times without success, so I had to reset it and re-join aimesh. Then I realized, that at the time it happened, I have used my welding machine very intensively for a few hours and it was connected to the same power line (same phase and fuse) as my node. I believe, that this was the reason for reseting my node. I am mentioning it because sometimes we don't think about external influences only trying to find the reason inside HW/SW in our box.

Happened to me too, also the wifi password protection disappeared few times but you couldn't connect to the network. This was taking place while router was not connected to interupting power supply. After installing UPC issue no longer. However Asus should certainly address the issue. I'm not certain but my guess is that it's with the way the memory is written to the chip. And power flicker results in missalocation of stored data? Just a guess

I just wanted to follow-up to this thread and on my original problem.

Since first creating this thread, I've had my GT-AC5300 reset to factory defaults two more times. Each time this occured, it happened immediately after I momentarily turned off the fuse breaker for the plug the router was plugged into and then quickly turned it back on. As previously mentioned by others in this thread, it appears a momentary loss of power to the router may be causing it to reset to factory defaults. In my case, the power is only being cut for just a fraction of a second; the amount of time to flip a breaker to its outlet off and then immediately back while I try to find the correct breaker to turn off swhile I do some remodel work on my home. This has happened to me regardless of whether or not the router was plugged into surge protector or not. Very bizarre behavior. If I plan to shut the router's breaker off again. I'm going to the breaker leave it for a five seconds before turning it back on to see if this resolves the reset issue. I'll update this thread if/when that time comes.

Take care and thanks for the replies. As bizarre as the issue is, the replies certaily helped me track down the possible cause.

Happy Halloween everyone!

Yes, if you are going to crash your computers by pulling their power, avoid instantly trying to stop crashing them. It's no surprise weird things happened. A surge protector can not help what you did, but a UPS can and is recommended... electric power is likely to become less reliable.

Just a quick follow-up to this thread should anyone stumble across it with a similar problem.

I’ve had this router reset itself to factory defaults to more times since my last post. on one occasion, the power was off to the unit for about five minutes and the other occasion it was off for almost 4 hours.

The router must have some sort of non-volatile ram that saves its settings, but it continues to fail. I watched a video of a guy who disassembled one of these units, but I saw no evidence of there being a lithium battery inside the unit that could possibly be going bad.

This is an expensive and well-performing router that suits my needs perfectly, I rather not replace it simply because it randomly loses its settings when the power to it is cut. Does anyone have any further suggestions on what I might do to resolve this issue other than replace the unit before I spend the money doing so?

The weird thing is that cutting the power to the unit doesn’t always cause it to reset the defaults. It’s totally random when it occurs.

Thank you and Happy Holidays….

Use a quality UPS.

Cutting the power continuously as you're doing to test is only making the hardware frailer.

Have you tried using a new power supply for it?

IME, iffy electronics are not worth keeping around (they either work, or they don't, but I haven't seen one not working getting fixed to working status 'cheaply'). Buy a new router and don't do what you've done to the old one to keep it as healthy as possible.

Don't use extension cords. Don't use cheap surge protectors. Do put sensitive electronics on a quality UPS.
