ASUS AX-86U Host Names Randomly Stop Working

republicofdennis

New Around Here
Hi,
I've set up some host names in the "Manually Assigned IP around the DHCP list" in the LAN -> DHCP Server tab.

I use it to connect to various services on my network, mainly for testing servers locally.

Once I get it to start working, it works fine for a few days, but then I get connection errors on the host names (specifically failed to resolve errors, e.g.: "Failed to resolve 'hostname.lan' ([Errno 8] nodename nor servname provided, or not known'")).

Then to get the host names to work again I need to do a hard power cycle of the router and / or modem. This means pulling the power plug, waiting for the capacitors to discharge, and plugging in again. A soft reboot (via the router's webpage) does not clear the problem. Sometimes I need to try a few hard power cycles to get it to work.

When this happens, I seem also not to be able to connect to the device using the local IP address either (but I haven't tested this extensively so it may be a server configuration issue)

Firmware version: 3004.388.9_2
Diversion version: 5.4.5

Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

This doesn't sound like a problem with the host name or the router. A "Failed to establish a new connection: [Errno 61] Connection refused" error would indicate that the host server is no longer listening on that IP address and/or port.

sorry was looking at the wrong error when I was copying and pasting. fixed it above

When the problem occurs do an nslookup hostname.lan from the client device and post the entire output here. Try the same thing from as many other clients as possible to see whether it only effects specific clients.

In the meantime it could be useful if you post a picture of your "Manually Assigned IP around the DHCP list" together with a complete copy of the router's System Log (System Log - General Log).

Thanks, I've attached the picture and logs. Sometime between 1 PM and 4 PM I was attempting to access host names and resetting the router.

Thanks for the files. There's nothing obvious jumping out at me so we'll have to wait for it to happen again and try the tests posted above.

You should set System Log - General Log > Log only messages more urgent than = all so we see more useful information. Also, next time please don't obscure non-sensitive information like private IP addresses (192.168.x.x), MAC addresses or script names (e.g. /jffs/scripts/<URL>). It just makes things harder to diagnose.

Good Luck

thanks for your help. I'll report back when it happens again.
I don't think I can show the mac addresses because they are hard coded into the device itself, so if I take those devices anywhere, they can be traced back to this post and all my other devices can immediately be identified as belonging to me as well.
