This is my second unit. The same thing has happened on this one that happened on the first one. I unboxed the unit and went through the setup process. It worked great (both the 2.4 and 5). Then it asked to do the firmware update, which I did. After the update the 5GHz band does not work any more, although the 2.4 works fine. I have tried a factory reset. I have tried the latest Merlin firmware. I have tried going back to factory firmware. I called Asus tech support. Nothing has worked. I see in the logs it says that 5GHz is disabled but in the settings it is not disabled. Asus told me to return the unit but since this is the second time, I can't help but thinking there is something that I am missing. Any ideas? 
Edit: After talking with Asus tech support and Merlin I have decided to return it and get the RT-AC68U instead.
