ASUS RT-A66U SLOW WIFI

Matthewmiller259

New Around Here
hi i just upgraded my wifi speeds on my timewarner/spectrum internet to their 400mbps service from their 100mbps. I have an asus RT-66U unit. The question i have is and my knowledge on this is very minimal hence why im on here asking for help lol, but i did a wifi test on my 5g connection and was standing about 5 feet from my router and my maximum speed was 120mbps. Now i did a test through my wired xbox which actually showed 450mbps download. I do not have access to another wired computer so im going off that. The router settings are as they where the day i bought it. What could be causing this loss of down load speeds?? Thank you in advance.

  • If your xbox supports wireless you could test 5GHz with that?
  • You don't mention what wireless device you tested with?
  • Surely you have a friend who has a laptop with wireless and an Ethernet port? Invite him over for a beer.

What causes speed issues on WiFi:
- interference
- connection type (G,N,AC)
- AP & client capabilities (G,N,AC - 1x1,2x2)
- channel width

Without knowing more about the client and the configuration of the WiFi on the AP, we can't really know what is going on. It isn't clear if you have a RT-N66U or a RT-AC66U so we aren't sure what max speeds your AP is even capable of yet.

Oh jesus im sorry yes its the RT-AC66U. I did have a spectrum tech come today and verify i was not getting 400mbps to my house, which he did fix and am currently getting 450mbps hardwired through the asus. I did a factory reset with the router so its all default settings on 5g and 2g. I stood a couple ft away with 100% signal and maxed out on my motorola g5 phone @ 160mbps. My security settings are WPSA-Personal with the wpa encryption setting at AES on both 2g and 5g. Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this just dont know what to do. My firmware version is 3.0.0.4.380_8120 and i have the channel bandwith 20/40/80hz for both 2g and 5g

Pretty sure you are at the limits of the G5 around 200Mbps. I am not home at the moment to test....but I don't think my G5 gets over 200Mbps on my wireless either. However my laptop can get closer to 400Mbps just fine.

Anyone else have any suggestions?? On my pc im using the ANEWKODI 600Mbps Dual wifi usb wireless adapter and am still hitting only 150mbps on 5g. The router is roughly 20 feet away. I would think i could get more than that. Just seems like something in the programming is slowing it down on the router.

only 150mbps on 5g. The router is roughly 20 feet
This review on your "ANEWKODI 600Mbps Dual wifi usb wireless adapter" might give you some insight ...

Advertising is additive. Making up numbers, 150 on 2.4 plus 450 on 5 GHz equals 600. You will get one or the other at a time, not both.

450 (433 rounded up) is the "link" (or something like that), not your throughput. Something like half that is a theoretical awesome. Now add 20 feet.
