Assuming you're using subnetting of 255.255.255.0, and the router is set to IP 192.168.2.1, the laptop and other machines should have IPs of 192.168.2.x.
Using DHCP?
ok, this is starting to get crazy. i'm not sure if people aren't believing me or what, but here are the facts as far as I know them to be:
my router was upgraded to 726 using the advised reset method. I lost all my settings, had to start from scratch.
my asus router has ALWAYS been set to 192.168.2.1 by me.
I tried to upgrade to 979, it failed, idk why.
I could not reach it via my laptop AT ALL, via wireless, wired, or other means, while my win7 laptop was still set to "automatically get an IP"
I DID eventually hit the reset button on the router during this time, numerous times, to no helpful effect. ergo I thought it was bricked.
I then read the manual, which says what I put in the earlier post. only when I set/assigned the win7 laptop to a manual (static) IP addy of 192.168.1.11 could I reach the router. maybe in "emergency mode" or whatever its in, it changes itself to 192.168.1.1? idk.
but that's what worked. after the reflash, my router was back to normal, with all my settings retained including 192.168.2.1 for the router. that shocked me, b/c I figured that would all be gone once I hit the reset button.
now I am happy to clarify anything I said above, but if it doesn't make sense to you, or whatever the case may be, all I can tell you is that is what I observed.
