The router has nothing to do with the issues you have.

What are the LAN IPs for the router/modem and for the ASUS router?
On the ASUS router - LAN -> LAN IP -> IP Address

How is the Internet connection configured?
On the ASUS router - WAN -> Internet Connection -> WAN Connection Type

It's getting late here, 11.30pm... someone else will help you further. It's just a router, don't get stressed out.

Yeah you're right, it was 4am here so I was just frustrated.

Still can't get the router to work, even seeing the menu is a chore, and while setting up it can just drop the connection, so seeing all settings is hard too.

even seeing the menu is a chore

- reset the ASUS router to factory default settings
- wait for it to boot, connect to the open ASUS SSID
- go through the quick internet setup wizard, set your user/pass only
- do not change any default settings, leave everything as it is
- do not connect WAN or LAN ports

Browse quickly through WebUI menus. Is the WebUI lagging again?

I don't actually have a WiFi card in my pc, I've been trying to setup using wired. Trying on my phone now.

I flashed Merlin software to see if that would make a difference and now the internet light is a mix of white and red... so I'm not sure how default this reset will be. Should I clear the nvram?

I'm also trying to use this as a VDSL router to access fibre/cable internet. So the setup doesn't allow me to do an automatic setup without a wan connected

Ok so after setup was completed the WiFi cuts off and I can't connect to it. This also happens through the LAN connection. Right after the setup is complete it lags and loses connection.

Did you follow the procedure?
https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin/wiki/Installation
How did you reset the router, if you did?

I can't really help you if you continue changing things on the fly.
What is your main WebUI page saying for Internet Status?

I understand but there's a lot of time in-between talking to you and trying to fix this. I don't see anything on that procedure that I blatantly didn't do, the router was up to date with Asus own firmware before I flashed it. I think I used the flash recovery to try and make sure that no other firmware was maybe conflicting with it.

I see I'm making this harder than it has to be, so let me try and be more helpful.

Sometimes the web UI says the internet is connected and then just lags and cuts out, sometimes it says it's disconnected, then lags and cuts out. Often to get the setup going again id have to reset the router again.

I have the internet cable from my master socket plugged into the modem, then an ethernet cable from the LAN port on the modem to the WAN port of the router. I'm not sure how to check the IPs of the routers...

How do you login to the modem/router WebUI? What address?
How do you login to the ASUS router WebUI? What address?

When your computer is plugged into a LAN port of the modem/router, what IP address it gets?
Or what WAN IP your ASUS router is showing? It's on the main WebUI page...

From the network info on Windows IPv4 shows 192.168.5.3

modem/router - 192.168.5.1

What is your main ASUS WebUI page saying for Internet Status?
Is the WAN IP 192.168.5.x? Does it say Connected?
What's the IP of your computer when connected to the ASUS router?

Only way I could see now is to reset the router again. The web UI cannot be reached and windows hasn't connected to show me the IP

No need to reset, reboot it.

Windows has connected but is showing no internet access. The browser is looping trying to load. The touble shooter says the DNS server isn't responding. Windows is showing the IPv4 address as 192.168.1.103

Can you attach screenshots of your:

1. Home Page - Internet Status (click on the globe icon to open the info window)
1. WAN - Internet Connection

Try this first:
(I'm assuming everything else is correct there)

WAN -> Internet Connection -> Connect to DNS Server automatically -> No
DNS Server1 - 8.8.8.8
DNS Server1 - 8.8.4.4
Apply

Default settings for Basic Config sections are:
WAN Connection Type -> Automatic IP
Enable WAN -> Yes
Enable NAT -> Yes
NAT Type -> Symmetric

Don't change anything in sections:
Account Settings
Special Requirement from ISP

WAN -> Internet Connection -> Connect to DNS Server automatically -> No
DNS Server1 - 8.8.8.8

I can't get back into the web UI, as I said I would have to reset the router and setup again for it to load the web UI.

would a nvram reset eliminate any possible firmware problems?

There are no Internet connection related firmware problems.

How to reset the router and start the setup process - User Manual, Page 16
I'm really trying to help here, but don't ask me to read the manual for you, please.

Your router should be up and running in 5 minutes if you follow the manual. I don't know why you flashed different firmware already when Internet connection problem is still present. You didn't even mention what version of Asuswrt-Merlin you flashed on the router.
