Release ASUS RT-AX86 Series(RT-AX86U/RT-AX86S) Firmware version 3.0.0.4.388_24339 (2025/04/21)

Slightly odd that the size of the firmware ballooned with this latest release...

The last 20+ releases before this have been <75MB, but this version is over 95MB.

Would just "Improved compatibility with certain IoT devices" add so much to the firmware size, given it's a very minor release?!

Don't know what version you are looking at but for ax86u this firmware unzipped is 81,408 KB

I don't usually pay attention to file sizes, as I typically update through the web GUI. The last couple updates were the only exception of doing a manual update as the 86U wasn't the main router for a while. Now it is, and will just install any future updates through firmware updates fully through the Administration section in settings.

See screenshot below - looking at unzipped sizes directly from the Asus site.

Big jump of 24MB with a tiny update between the last two versions...

File size is the same for me when I download it to check. The site is wrong.

If you download the file, it’s only 71.5 MB, despite what the page says.

Aha nice, thanks for checking - I should have done that 😅

Why does it matter anyway? You're not likely to depend on the router's flash storage to store any personal items.

Yeah, I don't care about the flash storage. My concern was more about what code they may have added to drive such a jump in the file size.

I had thought about possibly the firmware file being tampered with, but I think Asus takes pretty good measures to avoid that, and hopefully, if something like that had happened, the router would have rejected it due to a mismatch of some kind.
