ASUS RT-BE92U

This morning, I closed the chapter on the RT-BE92U. I couldn't resolve the issue with the smart devices, and this morning I tried the following before giving up.
Do a fresh setup from a hard factory reset
Configured all three bands as separate SSIDs (usual setup this way)
Turned off WiFi 7 for all bands for 6Ghz
Set all bands to WPA 2 personal (only) other than 6Ghz.
Disabled 6Ghz so it was just a dual band router like the RT-AX86U

Nothing solved the issue, and it's way past the return period since I got it last year right on release day practically.
So I tossed it out, since I was tired of swapping things back and forth and just wanted things to be stable for now.
So, I'm using my RT-AX86U as my router now, and the RT-BE92U was a good router while it worked, and I was able to use it as a daily driver. So, either the firmware went bad, or the hardware. Either way, it's no longer my problem.

When I bought it last year, I didn't need anything greater than WiFi 6, I got it because I was looking to upgrade to faster Ethernet capabilities, so I would have some grow room going forward.

UCG-Max + U7 Pro Max? :)
I've considered them for a while. Sounds like a good upgrade after the RT-AX86 is no longer usable, or I come to the point where I need more. Also got a new cable modem the other one was still having connection issues in addition to the LED situation we talked about. The new one is rock solid, and is a newer revision of what I had. I also finally got some useful info from Cox. My connection is a direct connection to the box, no splitters, and because of it, the signal comes in a bit high. So. the tech that was last out gave me a 6db atteuator for the back of the modem which has kept things happy. I've also stuck with the 500 / 50 plan which has also been stable. I never could keep a solid connection with gigabit once they upgraded to 100 upload (in this particular area). So, with the exception of missing a bit of upload bandwidth now, I've got a stable connection with the available resources and option I have here. I actually have a bit more upload with the 500 / 50 package than I did with Gigablast when I initially started. I only had 35 then, and now, I get closer to 600 down and 60 up.

In terms of download, I'm actually not as disappointed as I thought I would be having to settle for a slower plan. There is only a minute, or less difference on large downloads, and uploads don't feel all that different either. The extra upload would have been nice, but I need stable, and since Cox still doesn't give unlimited data for free, dropping the plan saves me $30, so overall a win.

By the way, I did call Verizon yesterday and their 5G internet isn't available where I live, so that kind of stinks too. That I still don't have any alternative providers I could change to. Starlink is out because no dishes are allowed to be mounted on the apartments, and Cox is the only cable provider here at this location, and no fiber yet.

There is a new AIO device from Ubiquiti, if interested:

Similar to UCG-Max + U7 Pro hardware, comes cheaper at $279. All you need for an apartment. It is targeted at home users and the new UniFi OS and Network Application updates even have Wi-Fi and QoS few clicks presets very similar to home AIO routers.

Some people worry about SMB equipment learning curve - here you go, as easy as possible. You can still tinker with advanced settings.

There is a definate memory leak in the latest fw for the RT-BE92U. I've seen memory climb from ~630MB to 930MB now after 1 day 8 hours of uptime. Factory default install apart from updated password and a syslog server being set. Only 3 clients connected to it as I am running this alongside my main connection on a separate network for testing purposes.

I'd noted that previously when it was coming up to a crash that I would not be able to log into it at all, telling me bad password, bad capture etc, and from experience I know this is sort of the weird issue you'd see with memory issues on other systems.

Even with the issues being listed on this thread, I took the plunge and bought this router.

On the latest firmware, mine has been running for just over 5 days and has been happily sitting at around 760MB used and 265 MB free.

I first connected the unit to the internet, updated the firmware to the latest available and then manually set it up based on settings used on my previous RT-AC68U router. About once a day, I have logged in, to check if the router has crashed (nothing yet) and occasionally have made some small setting changes.

I'm curious if there is a module or function that some users have switched on, that I have switched off.
No to be overly negative, but I'm kind of expecting there to be a memory leak with some feature on the unit. Hopefully it doesn't bother me too much before it gets fixed!

I have a mix of wired and wireless devices. Of the wireless devices, only 2 are WIFI7, an iPhone and a Win11 laptop.
I'm not using the ASUS app to set it up or check on it. I log into the web client using FireFox with either my Android phone (WIFI6 or 6e) or my Win10 desktop (wired). (Years and years ago, I had an issue logging in with Safari on an iPad to my 68U. That caused the web client to crash and I needed to restart the router, to get back in. After that experience, I've never tried logging into the 68U and now the BE92U with an Apple device. I'm sure the issue has been fixed after such a long time, but don't want to or really need to find out the hard way).

Let me know if you want any of the settings I use, but remember I've only been using it for 5d since new, so tomorrow morning might bring something interesting. I'm sure my kids will let me know first, if something does go wrong. :)

My router just rebooted for the second time today. About an hour after I took that memory screenshot it crashed, and its just crashed again now, 5.5 hours later.

My config is the factory defaults apart from a new admin password and having set up a syslog server to collect logs. I even still have the Asus_80 SSID.

Wireless clients are an iPhone 11, Apple Watch 10 which are both 5Ghz, a Lenovo laptop which is on 6GHz and Wifi7, and another Lenovo laptop that is wired.

It's an external syslog server. I only added this to capture some logs after I had issues with the router rebooting. Other than that and the password it's pure factory defaults, so Samba is enabled.

I hope my settings are reasonably stable, before I start announcing it to the world and I look like a fool. 🤞
I've got 5d and all is well, and you've only got 5h and are running into issues, so there's a difference somewhere.

Before I tell you what I have enabled (in another post), I'll list the things that I have disabled:
- WPS is off: Wireless -> WPS -> Enable WPS
- MLO is off. For me this was the default setting when I started. I have left it off, as I don't have anything that uses it and other posters have commented on this being an issue. Wireless -> MLO
- UPnP is off. WAN -> Internet Connection -> Enable UPnP (Off for improved security)
- IPv6 is off. I don't use it or need it.
- I've setup in Wireless Router Mode. Administration -> Operation Mode.
- Because I am in the southern hemisphere, I had to swap around the DST start and end times and I've specified an NTP server. You can find those settings in: Administration -> System -> Basic Config. While you are here, ensure you've set the correct time zone for where you are living.
- I can't remember what default was, but Telnet is off. Administration -> System -> Service -> Enable Telnet (Off for improved security)
- Auto firmware upgrade is off. Administration -> Firmware Upgrade -> Auto Firmware Upgrade (I like to do it myself at a time of my liking, in the slight chance I might avoid a dud update or the router restarting when I don't want it to).

After reading Ripshod's reply above, I have now turned off the Samba server and the Media Server in the USB Application section. All servers are now off in the USB Application section. I haven't used them and I haven't adjusted the settings here so they're not likely to be the issue, but thought I'd turn them off for now anyway, since I have no need for them.

When I first setup the unit, I setup all the settings manually, avoiding the auto setup process. I had the settings that worked from my previous router, so why not.

Another thing, I'm plugged into a UPS, so the power supply is relatively stable. Dirty power can be an issue with some devices.

I hope something above helps. If not and IF my set up stays stable and you continue to experience issues, I think we'd need to go through the other settings I have changed, possibly one by one. :( (5d up time isn't very long, so I'm not claiming success. I'm aiming for 50d or much better before I claim success!)

The issues I had with this router happened in almost a year of owning it, and using it as the daily router. Certain, iOT devices started to malfunction while connected to this router. The two main ones were Alexa's voice becoming distorted when controlling one of the malfunctioning smart bulbs. I was never able to resolve the issue even by disabling all the wifi 7 stuff and wpa3 for 2.4Ghz and even toggling 6Ghz on / off to see if that was causing issues. So, for now, as I mentioned in an above post, I've gone back to my RT-AX86U as my main reason for purchasing this router was mainly for the faster Ethernet ports, and having the lated version of AsusWRT. With that said though, since the solution to my other internet related issues has been to stick with Cox's 500 / 50 plan vs going back to a gigabit, There isn't any real need currently for me to have any higher than gigabit ports, and when I did get things to work, and was able to test the router with a higher speed last year, the difference wasn't enough for the cost I'd have to pay, especially for just one person. At least I was able to find out for myself, and have a better idea of what my real needs are now. So far, I've had rock solid service with an Arris S33v3 modem and my RT-AX86U.
