I bought a an Asus RT-N12 D1 to use as a wireless repeater for my home network.
I updated firmware to latest version 3.0.0.4.374.4561, and made the easy configuration to 'repeater' mode.
Problem is, even with the router in repeater mode sitting 3 feet from my computer, indicated wifi signal strength is 3 bars and connection is spotty, to say the least. When I move the RT-N12 just slightly farther away, there is no detectable signal at all.
Questions:
Is this a known issue with this hardware?
Would going to 3rd party firmware like Tomato or DDRT likely change things?
Is there a DDRT version that works on this router? (On the router list for DDRT, they indicate support for RT-N12 and versions B and C but I don't see version D1. However, there was at least one reviewer on Newegg who said he installed DDRT)
Any other ideas about how to approach this problem, or should I throw this thing in the garbage bin?
