Asus RT-N66U issues

I've had this router for over 2 months now and it's been amazing. First thing I did was flash Shibby's tomato firmware and everything was great.

The past couple of days I noticed a lot of lag, so I ran a test at speedtest.net and noticed my pings were like 750ms and bandwidth was complete crap. So I rebooted the router and we were back to normal.

Next morning, it started again. So I rebooted the router again and everything was fine for about 15 minutes and it started again. I built a ppoe client on my laptop and connected directly to my incoming line and all was fine, so I know it's the router.

I decided to update to the very latest firmware from shibby yesterday, and things have been fairly ok since, until today. My ping on speedtest.net is good, but I typically get almost 11mbps down and .75 up... now I'm getting 2.67 down and .2 up.

I don't know why the sudden onset of problems is occurring.... I really hope it's not the hardware failing in some way. I'm thinking of trying to load the stock firmware back on and see if that helps. Has anybody else had a similar issue or have any suggestions on what to do?

Could it be something else on your network causing abnormal traffic (such as a torrent client)? Rebooting the router would essentially cut all existing connections, so making the issue disappear. Check in Tomato's traffic monitoring.

Another way to test that theory is to disconnect then reconnect your PPPoE session - if you use a dynamic IP, that will have the same effect.

Thanks for the reply -- I did look at bandwidth utilization when the problem was occurring and all of the levels were pretty low... nothing very noteworthy.
