My file transfers are strangely slow (7-10MB/s on wired) from a external usb connected to the router. Is there any way to speed them up? I am unable to stream 1080p movies because of this.

That sounds like a 100 Mbits limitation. Check the speed of the connection between the router and the device to which you are streaming.

100Mbit should be more then enough for streaming.

USB 1.1 allowed a maximum transfer rate of 12Mbits/second. It is now obsolete, but both of its speeds (1.5Mbps & 12Mbps) are being adopted into USB 2.0, and they are now called Original USB officially. Though some manufacturers label their products Full-Speed USB. Note that this seems a bit deceptive as it's easy to mistake Full-Speed for Hi-Speed. You won't be fooled from now on as you now aware that Full Speed USB is only 12Mbits/second where Hi-Speed USB mode is capable of a much faster 480Mbits/second.

Connection says 1Gbit so not sure what is going on. When directly connected to the pc I get normal USB2.0 speeds from one hdd and USB3.0 speeds from the other. Could this be a ntfs issue?

I am able to reach 15 MB/s using NTFS here. You could try replacing your cable in case it might not be up to specs, and causing a lot of packet retransmits.

Also make sure Download Master and the Media Server aren't enabled, because they could be causing disk access which would drop your performance (the latter might be indexing, for example).

The partition type itself shouldn't really matter when it comes to performance.

Yes, you are right, the problem was with 29b, now I get back to 26b and read speed is again 13 MB/s.

But according to my test on my ac66u under 28b and 29b, the ext3 partition always gives me around 8.5MB read while NTFS gives me 12-13MB. Weird.

That's the filesystem, not the partition type. Partition type means MBR vs GPT.

Anyway, can you confirm NTFS has better performance vs Ext 3 on ac66u? at least on 29b firmware?

No idea, I only use ext3 on my router. More reliable, and required for a lot of stuff such as Entware.

Hi Merlin, given your relation with asus , do you have any idea maybe heard some rumors on the next Asus official release for N66 ? or this model dropped on the priority list as the new AC routers are pushed forward and we should expect updates further and further apart

They currently don't have any ETA for the next RT-N66U update. The current priority is on finalizing the RT-AC56 firmware in time for the mass availability of the product in the coming weeks.

Don't worry however. Focusing on the RT-AC56/RT-AC68 does not mean that no development is being done for the current routers. They all share the same core firmware code, so many changes made for the new routers will also apply to the older routers once a new FW release is made. They also fixed the Ethernet latency bug on the RT-AC66U, and are working on implementing Beamforming for both the RT-N66U and RT-AC66U.

To be honest, I also wonder what is the difference in the current AiRadar implementation, and real beamforming as they plan to implement. Might be worth bouncing that question to CL-Jeremy.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to wait for the GPL release to check if there was any change to the wireless driver (the 372 SDK Asus sent me last week doesn't contain the RT-N66U binary bits).

That's what I was expecting, since a few days ago they told me they didn't have any news regarding the wireless driver.

I also tried upgrading my laptop to the new 15.8 wireless driver from Intel just in case they might have fixed it on their end, but no luck.
