ausus rt68u router switch and modem connections

New Around Here
I have the following items hard wired

skingbox
modem
router (asus)
computer
security sytem
switch

I would like everything connected to the switch.
Modem goes to switch, router goes to switch, does not work, I think I need to disable something on the modem.

I need to access device remotely thought wan, and while in the home thought wireless, I can get one or the other but not both.

I think this has something to do with the firewalls not allowing traffic to go backwards.

if I connect slingbox (remote tv) to router I cannot get tv when away from home, but if connected to modem I can get remote tv. do I need to port forward to router ip?

Modem -> Router -> Switch -> everything else. Is your modem a true modemmor is it a gateway?

Set up a VPN and then when you access from away from home, it will be just like you are at home.
