New Around Here
I apologize in advance for cross-posting. I posted this in another thread but seems like the Merlin threads are more active, so posting here too for better chances of receiving a response. If cross-posting isn’t allowed, please (mods) delete this.
I own an AX86U Pro. Under the professional WiFi settings menu (5GHz band), I noticed there are two MU-MIMO settings:
1. Multi-User MIMO
2. OFDMA / 802.11ax MU-MIMO
The first one has a simple Enable/Disable toggle.
For the second one, MU-MIMO can only be enabled if OFDMA is also enabled as both are combined under one single drop-down option.
I have some questions:
1. Why are there two MU-MIMO options? Is the first one for WiFi5 (802.11ac) clients and the other one for WiFi6 (802.11ax) clients exclusively?
2. Assuming the answer to the second part of my first question above is ‘yes’, how do I enable MU-MIMO (for both WiFi5 and WiFi6 clients) while keeping OFDMA disabled? The reason I want to keep OFDMA disabled is because it doesn't play nice with two of my devices (a Roku Ultra and an HP laptop).
Also, looking at the professional settings menu on BE routers, we have these options:
1. Multi-User MIMO
2. OFDMA / 802.11ax MU-MIMO
3. WiFi7 MU-MIMO
3. WiFi7 OFDMA
So, it seems Asus has, once again, combined OFDMA and MU-MIMO into one setting for AX (like they do on their AX routers) but separated OFDMA and MU-MIMO into separate settings for BE, which I feel is how it should be. Am I correct to assume that the following statements are all true if someone wants to enable MU-MIMO but disable OFDMA on a WiFi7 Asus router?:
1. For WiFi5 clients - enable “Multi-User MIMO”
2. For WiFi7 clients - enable “WiFi7 MU-MIMO” and disable “WiFi7 OFDMA”
3. For WiFi6 clients - just like on their AX routers, this can’t be done because for some strange reason, Asus decided to combine MU-MIMO and OFMDA into one single setting. I read somewhere that “Multi-User MIMO” is for downlink across WiFi 5/6/7, and then the MU-MIMO options for WiFi 6/7 are for uplink MU-MIMO…but I don’t think that’s the case because on WiFi7 routers, you can set the “WiFi7 MU-MIMO” option to “DL MU-MIMO” only. I think Asus combining the OFDMA and MU-MIMO settings for WiFi6 is a design flaw in their firmware, but I’m interested to hear what others think.
