Solved BE86U vs Virgin Media

Has anyone from the working successfully got the RT-BE86U working on a virgin media line using the Hub 5 in modem mode??? If you have or anyone has a trick up there sleeve please post. Would Merlin firmware be an option to try???

Thanks for feedback.

What is Virgin Media Community saying about this issue?

Perhaps they know some ISP gateway specific tricks already.

What are the issues with the BE86 on Virgin Media? I've not noticed any specific posts about it.

I'm interested as I'm thinking about upgrading from my RT-AX86U router to either the BE86 or BE88. I've used Asus routers on my Virgin Media connection for many years and not had an issue with the hub in modem mode.

You'd need to post under "Tech Chatter" in that forum, else the VM Staff will shut the conversation down as not a VM issue they can fix.
Tech chatter area is community only and staff do not manage that area for support calls.

AFAIK, on the HFC network or RFoG network (HFC=coax RFoG=fibre to outside home, then coax inside all using DocSIS) a HUB5 will just work with it when in modem mode.
If it's a NexFibre area, (full fibre FTTP, No DocSIS) there is no modem mode on the Hub5x used, but there are articles on Google on how to get an SFP module and configure it and do away with the HUB5x router.

Thanks @Unisoft for the explanation. 👍

Now we wait for more detailed problem description when @Fyew-jit-tiv comes back.

Sorry for delayed response. SO i finally got this setup to work. Turns out for what ever reason the VM router (when in modem mode) would not let go of a previous mac code related to my laptop. tried tons of times using same config and just wont pass an external IP to the BE-86U and literally at the point of going "i give up", it freaking worked. and yeah using the same config. Thanks to you all for suggestions. @Tech9 Nice Shot :p. actually picked up a few tips from the link you supplied.

It should release this upon reboot of the VM HUB5. Power up your router after the HUB5 rebooted, always works for me.
If its doing weird issues, then a factory reset and putting it back into modem mode is best.

I've found on some occasions that I've needed to leave the Virgin Hub powered off for a few minutes. I read some time ago on the Virgin Community forum that it can take up to 20 minutes to release the previous mac address.

So now I power off the router and hub, swap the cabling over, have a coffee and power it all up and it's normally fine.

I had a similar issue a few years ago when I first signed up to Virgin. Taking the router from router mode to modem mode, and attaching a new router immediately caused problems. Since then I've just powered the hub off for a few minutes and it's all fine.

In my area of VM, I don't get these delays, but since VM is a hotch potch of different networks which were all separate cable companies at one time, some areas might be different.
You might be able to get around this in the future by cloning your MAC address of the old router in your new router (WAN page)
