BE98 Pro 2.4 Disconnects

TomP

New Around Here
I've had this router for several months. Is constantly and randomly disconnects smart devices, particularly Ring devices. They reconnect after 30-60 seconds. I've read elsewhere disabling wifi 6 helps but I cannot as smart connect seems to have control and it won't turn off.

turn off "smart connect" for starter. See this post for configuring the 2.4GHz band for IOTs and other general suggestions.

What band are the Rings et all connecting to ?
What is the RSSI value at each ?

You may have to factory reset and manually configure the router.
Are you using an IOT VLAN ? or GUEST VLAN ?

Search the forums for "ring" and "disconnect"
Search for "smart connect" and "disable"

There is no Smart Connect setting....

Under Network where you create SSIDs you would have 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz checked for one SSID (and password). If you want to separate them uncheck one or the other. That frees up the unchecked one and you can select that to create another SSID. (You can name them the exact same from past experience). WPA2/WPA3-Personal works well (with Smart Connect) on my Ring devices, so I am perplexed. As @degrub asks are they far away from the router?

What was your prior router. Do you remember the settings, you should be able to copy them over to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz....

I'm likely going to have to factory reset. SSID's are all named different but same password. I think the issue started when I added nodes (GT-AX11000 my previous router, and a RT-AC86U) The 11000 is using ethernet backhaul. I didn't check that on the BE98. Seems Smart Connect get turned on or get locked on in that configuration. Now it can't be turned off. My guess is the Ring devices get bounced around to different nodes? Cameras, etc are inside and outside. RSSI's are good. Had them in the same position for a number of years. Currently the router has 5G, two 6G, 2.4G and a IoT 2.4G that I had to make for some wireless smart devices that would not connect to the main 2.4G. Everything was connected to the 11000 and the AC86U prior to the new router.

I have a similar issue with my new be-96u setup new from the latest firmware update. About every 8-10 days it would drop ALL 2.4 GHz clients and the 2.4 GHz wifi would not be available for about 3-5 minutes. It would then come back on and clients would all reconnect. Signal to all devices is very good with no range/noise issues that I can see. I dialled down the transmit power on the router under professional wireless settings and see if that will help. I love the router otherwise and despite my love affair with unifi and its much superior interface, it is no match for a AIO router solution from asus that just mostly "works". Aside from the ugly interface and the weird 2.4 Ghz network drop outs its been fabulous.

[Wireless Router] How to configure the Smart Connect in ASUS Router?
  • If you need to turn off Smart Connect, you can set different WiFi names and passwords for different WiFi bands.
The question about turning off Smart Connect, and the inability to do so, on the BE 98 Pro has been asked and discussed in the past:
Example post from that thread:
You can't turn off Smart Connect anymore.
The only way to disable it is to separate all your bands with different SSIDs.
Many users in online forums have reported that disabling Smart Connect resolved their connectivity issues. However, since Asus has removed this option in their routers, it's possible that the feature has been improved and is now more reliable.

I've read all that. I've always had different names for the bands.
