Best practice for manually assigning IP addresses?

Well, this is one time when the OP used the correct terminology and I understood just what he wants to do.

Well, it can be argued that while the phrase "manually assigning IP addresses" may appear to be correct terminology, it's technically incomplete & ambiguous because there are 2 distinct ways (at least) to go about it:

- Use the router's Web GUI to manually make an IP address reservation for each client device.

- Use the specific client device's interface program to manually assign it a static IP address.

So which way does one actually mean by simply saying "manually assigning IP addresses"?
