New Around Here
I installed AsusWRT-Merlin easily, and I was able to get it all set up (including parental restrictions for certain times on my children's devices). It is working well, but I can no longer connect to the router to make adjustments.

I do have an IP address (of course) and I can get out to the internet and to other intranet devices. My gateway, DHCP and DNS server are all 192.168.1.1. If I attempt to contact that address via http or https on any device or computer, wireless or Ethernet, I get a message: "can't establish a connection to the server at 192.168.1.1" or "This page can’t be displayed". It's not that I can't log in, I can't even be prompted to log in. The router has been rebooted, and I have no more ideas on how to proceed.

Help!

"My gateway, DHCP and DNS server areall 192.168.1.1"

Have you confirmed this either from the Asus Device Discovery tool or some similar network app such as Network Toolbox for iOS or the Fing app? Or are you assuming this because it's what you (believe you) set up?

And have a look here:

https://www.asus.com/support/faq/109936/

On second thoughts, having read through that link, maybe you'd be better off not following their advice.

Did you restore the router to factory default settings AFTER having installed Merlin's firmware?

And, if so, did you try simply rebooting the router?

I can see it in the "Network Connection Details" on Windows, or the equivalent on OS X (I'm not on the Mac at the moment) or in the wifi information screen on iOS.

I have now reset the router to default, and can connect (for now). Of course, all the settings I had are gone. I suppose my question now is what did I do wrong? It was working and then not working. I made no changes in between those states.

What can I do in the future to prevent my needing to reset? I'm coming from using EasyTomato which needed absolutely no "fixes" for years. (I liked the access restriction grouping options much better in EasyTomato, but had to replace my router with something more modern.)

Thanks.

I did reboot the router (as I stated in the OP), but I did not reset to factory after installing Merlin. I had not made any changes in the ASUS firmware however. I just connected and installed.

Thanks.

I imagine the problem was caused by your failure to reset the router to factory default settings AFTER flashing with Merlin from the stock firmware.

Have a read of Merlin at:

Hopefully, you should be fine now.

You may find it worthwhile to acquaint yourself with John's NVRAM Save and Restore Utility to backup your settings and to restore the router to your personal settings next time there is a need to restore to factory default status.

It's strange that it worked for a while and then stopped, but I still think you are correct. I didn't realize that flashing Merlin would leave anything behind from the stock AsusWRT, but if the NVRAM held settings that conflicted with Merlin, I guess that would be bad.

I will do that. Thank you.
