Can't see 5ghz on router

Edit: Solved. I had to install the official drivers instead of using the ones supplied with Windows 10. That's how it goes, toil for a few hours, make a big thread about your problem, then you instantly figure it out after you click submit. Oh well, keeping it here for Google sake.

I just bought this adapter and I'm beginning to wonder if it's faulty or just missing a setting on my N66U. This is my first 5ghz adapter so I assumed I could just plug it right in and it see my 802.11n 5G network but it only sees the 2.4Ghz one. From what I gather from here, the adapter does support 802.11n 5Ghz. I have a Nexus Player and another router that both use the 5Ghz from the router but is there anything else I could do before I send the adapter back? Things I've done:

  • Changed wireless mode to "N only" or "auto"
  • Changed preamble type
  • Changed regulation mode to "802.11h" or "802.11d+h"
  • Cranked up the 5ghz to 200mw, couldn't receive it upstairs or downstairs on two different PCs
  • Chose "Prefer_5G" in Windows driver settings and channel mode to "5G only"
  • Tried different antennas for the adapter and different USB ports

if the FWIW category - the Win10 drivers from MSFT for the Asus USB-AC56 USB dongle - the defaults were to prefer 2.4GHz, so a common SSID, it would lock on to 2.4, and never see 5GHz without going into Device Manager to tweak advanced settings in the driver to prefer 5GHz...

Defaults are safe perhaps, but can lead to confusion sometimes...
