Cudy Switches; do they pass VLAN tags like tp-link do ?

Hi, I’m looking at a Cudy 2.5G unmanaged switch primarily for size and cost. There’s a couple of threads which refer to tp-link switches being able to pass VLAN tags through; but trendnet switches not.

Does anyone know if Cudy switches have this capability. I l really like the small form factor and it needs to go in a cupboard with little room. Thanks!
Any Cudy switch users out there? Heat, noise if they have a fan, anything to watch out for?

I think the conventional wisdom on that is "it depends". The manufacturers don't specify this behavior, so it might or might not do what you want. I wouldn't assume it's consistent across all switches from the same manufacturer. It's possible that it might even vary from one batch to the next of the same switch model.

Cheers ... I guess I was hoping that someone had actually bought one, tried it and could tell me yup, this model xyz works, your're good to go.

Unfortunately, so far, there seems to be sparse first hand user-experience of this brand in this forum yet... hopefully, someone will drop by and say I have just bought one and you're in luck :) ...

Just found this section of the forum as I've "opened a can of worms" so to speak with my first foray into managed switches. I got a Cudy GS105D switch free when I purchased a M1000 router off Amazon. It's still unopened in the box and I am not familiar with VLANs I'm afraid....

Ok, well iit’s a managed switch and if you eventually set up a VLAN. I’m sure you’ll be reading all about it soon enough :-). No hurry!

[Edit] It’s an unmanaged switch!

Just get whatever is confirmed to work and from a better known brand. Problem solved.

Sorry, the GS105D is an unmanaged switch. They do not give free managed switches (I suspect because they are more expensive). I did get a YuLinca brand 2G06210GSTM which is a 4-port 2.5 GbE, 1 10 GbE, 1 SFP+ Level 2 switch off Amazon. Now I'm getting 2 LLDP errors every 12 seconds on the ExpertWiFi EBG15 which I confirmed with YuLinca tech support that the "lightweight" switch does not support.

I thought all unmanaged switches do not/are not supposed to do any type of VLAN stripping....

That’s why I linked the posts in my OP. @visortgw has observed that TPLink umanaged switches pass VLAN Tags where TrendNET do not, so if not passing = stripping then there is at least one exception.

Created an Employee profile SDN with name "Employee" and selected exclusively the RT-AX86U for 2.4 and 5 GHz. With option "use same subnet" toggled off nor on was not able to connect my OnePlus Open...

Now wondering if it's because I disabled LLDP...

Tried the same process with the BQ16 Pro, this time I was able to connect within the same subnet (no VLAN) but failed when same subnet toggled off. Hmm. Will try the GT-BE98 Pro next, which is through TP-Link switch(es) exclusively....

Same with the GT-BE98 Pro, BUT I forgot about the cheap Chinese YuLinca managed switch...

To be continued....

Took my RT-AX5400 out of hibernation, connected WAN port directly to the EBG15 (port to far right, labeled 5 but seems internally as 1). Created a SDN Employee profile network with VLAN, and phone fails to connect. (My password is simply #s). If I use same subnet, no VLAN, phone connects just fine.

So at least with the ExpertWiFi EBG15, doesn't seem like I can create a VLAN guest/self-defined network, switch or no switch!

I'm actually surprised this mix in your signature still manages to provide some acceptable user experience.

I'm probably not noticing because of all the other WiFi "nodes" in the household:

main router TP-Link Deco BE95, Archer AX55 Pro, RE655BE, RE405BE, RE235BE, (EDIT as I forgot one)- Acer Predator Connect W6, Cudy M3000, and (newest addition) Tenda RE6L Pro (replaced the RT-AX5400).

Well, it turns out I do not have the Level 2/3 switch set up properly. The reason devices can not connect to the SDNs is because there is no DHCP service to them. I can connect once I set up a static IP to my phone. Once connected, though, about 5 seconds later my phone complains that there is no Internet access on the SDNs. Both through TP-Link switch(es) and TRENDnet I am able to connect to a SDN with VLAN if I set a static IP to my phone...

Sadly I have spent many hours trying to configure that darn Binardat switch...

Throwing in the towel I grabbed an EBM68, moved it to the same room/vicinity to the EBG15. I enable the DHCP server to the Employee VLAN, and connected directly together, I am easily able to connect to the Employee SDN, it gets an IP, as well as Internet access, now on to opening the Cudy unmanaged switch and trying again...

Tested one Cudy and one TRENDnet unmanaged switch, and the results:

Cudy GS105D: Passes Employee VLAN with flying colors
TRENDnet TEG-S762: Passes Employee VLAN with flying colors

Method: Verified Employee SDN works with EBG15 now in Router Mode. Turned off EBM68 via switch. Connect power and cables to switch in the middle. Power on EBM68. Wait, (gotta be patient for whatever reason). Open WiFi settings on my OnePlus Open (Android 16). Connect to Employee network with DHCP to assign IP. Open Google Chrome and access SNBforums. (I'm typing this message on my phone connected to Employee network and through the TRENDnet switch).

Any fault in my ways please let me know?

Okay, have more test results and they are perplexing....

D-Link DGS-2208: Pass
NETGEAR GS105 v4: Pass
TRENDnet TEG-S350 /A: Fail (tried twice with NETGEAR in between)
TRENDnet TEG-S380 /A: Fail

The TRENDnet that passed has 2 10 GbE and 4 2.5 GbE ports. The two that failed are pure 2.5 GbE switches, 5 and 8 ports...

Yeah, I had the same result with a TEG-S380: doesn't pass VLAN-tagged packets. In these unmanaged switches I think it comes down to which behavior the chipset defaults to.
