The D-Link DGS-2208 is an excellent unmanaged 8-port switch.
I did some quick Linux->Linux latency benchmarks using a high frequency (10k/sec) ping at different packet sizes and compared with a simple crossover cable - the different shows the latency due to the switch. See attachment.
Latency vaires between 14-39us with 25us latency for 1k packets and negligible outliers.
In multicast throughput tests 700mbits (of payload) is easily sustained with zero loss and in order delivery. The switch does not support iGMP and floods multicast to all ports.
These are excellent results for a $40 switch.
I highly recommend Intel Pro 1000 NICs - tests were all performed using Intel PWLA8391GT 10/100/1000Mbps PCI PRO/1000GT adapters (~$28 each).
PG.
