Files are MIA wirelessly???

Hello All.

I have a 30/5 cable connection using a Motorola SB6121 modem. Attached to the modem is my Asus rt-n66u router. The only hardwired device is a PS3. My laptop, xbox360, iPod and TV access the router wirelessly. Here is my problem... I have a FAT32 formatted Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desktop 1.5 TB (model: STAC1500100), which has its own power source, connected to the n66u router. On the HDD are .avi files that we would like to access wirelessly via the xbox 360. I made sure the HDD was mounted in the router config page and also set the permissions to "limitless" to allow anyone with network clearance to access the files.

Problem:

On the wireless laptop, that I manage the router config page from, I can access the HDD and view all the .avi files adequately. BUT when I try to view the files on the xbox 360, the HDD is seen but it states that "No Files Found" on the HDD. Oddly though, if I connect the HDD directly to the xbox, all the files are present and can be accessed.

Here are some solutions I have tried which all halt the same problem:

- Formatted the HDD back to NTFS and transferred .avi files back to reformatted HDD.
- Set permissions on the router config page to Admin, Limited, and Limitless but nothing changed except being able to access the HDD on the wireless laptop.
- Tried using Samba service and FTP service with no luck.

Any suggestions? I am using the latest Asus Firmware. Should I try flashing the router with a 3rd-party firmware? Totally lost!

I don't know but I have uploaded Merlin's firmware and I like it but it is base on Asus's and It still has problems and lots of bugs.


I have not been able to get Download Master to work and I think there are some software conflicts or bad coding in there somewhere.

I don't know where the DM app lives but would like to know it there is any way to clear the NVRam start over.

That might help alot of people with problems but I don't know. Maybe Merlin could help?

Download Master gets installed on the primary USB disk that you connect to your router. Deleting the asusware folder on that disk will remove the currently installed copy of Download Master.

If you have some basic Linux skills, I would recommend you read up on how to install Transmission through Optware or Entware (there is a tutorial for it posted on the RT-N66U sub-forum here). Download Master uses a quite old version of Transmission.

Keep in mind that torrenting from a low-power device such as a router will always be a hit-or-miss affair. Torrent clients were designed for modern computers with gigs of RAM and CPUs well over 2 GHz. A router with a 600 MHz MIPS processor (roughly equal to an old Pentium II) and 256 MB of RAM will always be far more limited.

I have reformated the usb drive several times and tried to reinstall the DM software. It says installed on the page but on the usb icon top right it says not installed.

I think there is some corrupt code or something in there or in the router. It wasn't doing all that before.

I will read up on the linux software you mention.

I currently have your .22 FW installed and like it much so far.

I know this router is a work in progress. I want to love it because it is very fast.

I am just disappointed with some of the functionality Asus says it comes with.

After installing Download Master check the System Log for any feedback regarding the installation.

For best results format the disk as ext2 or ext3, tho NTFS should also work, so long you don't need a full-fledged Optware install.

I have been formatting the disk as FAT32. I will be out of town for a few days so I won't mess with it til after the new year. I noticed some log entries about port forwarding to "???" don't know what thats about.

Those are simply connection attempts from the Internet that got dropped by your firewall. Nothing unusual there.

I posted the same problem yesterday,http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?p=56302#post56302 and i don't seem to be the only one, even using Merlins firmware does not seem to solve the problem, the funny thing is , my searches on the web reveal this to be a recent issue spanning various fw versions. Downgrading or upgrading does not seem to solve the problem. I tried to go as low as .90 (how is this possible? is something being changed /updated via a backdoor) neither does using a different drive, I DID notice that removing the 3G modem i have always used did solve the problem. but then replacing it with another brought back the problem. I can only use 3g where I live and it is the primary reason I bought this router. BTW you can try and access download master via "http://192.168.1.1:8081/task.asp"
