New Around Here
I just purchased a new RT-AC68U.

I plugged the cable modem (Netgear CG3100) network cable into the AC68U and I am connecting my computer to the AC68U by network cable. I also have connected my phone to the AC68U via wireless.

However about once or twice per day, there is a freeze. The network light on the Cable Modem (Netgear CG3100) turns orange indicating 100mbps and there is no connection. I tried restarting the CG3100 and the internet on my computer is still dead. I restarted the AC68U and everything works again.

It occurred with the original firmware (the latest ASUS firmware) and I am currently using the Merlin firmware and it still occurred yesterday.

This was the last system logs on the AC68U with the Merlin firmware ...

Hi Hawk,

I have only had the AC68U for 3 or 4 days. Today it has been fine so far.

Attached is the full system log :)

Asus RT-AC68U Freezes; must cycle power

I have a factory-refurbished Asus RT-AC68U which I just received Friday 2014-06-27. I configured my device for Access Point mode, which basically turns it into a 5-port switch with WiFi.

Over the first three days, the router worked fine for both wireless and wired clients. Starting two days ago, after powering it on, it ran anywhere from 1 to 3 hours and then locked up. The blue lights stopped pulsing and froze in whatever state they were in. All wireless and wired traffic stopped, as well. Using the unit's power button, I turned it off, waited a few seconds, and turned it back on -- after which the unit was completely responsive for several more hours.

Yesterday (Tuesday 2014-07-01) the length of time it would run until lockup was about 5 to 15 minutes. Coincidentally, it was also the first day where my room temperature was about 15 degrees (°F) warmer than prior days (about 85°F, 29°C). My RT-AC68U is not sitting atop any additional sources of heat, and it does not feel abnormally warm.

I don't have a way to get the log from where I am. It's apparently locked up right now because I can remote to one of my home machines but can't get to its web interface from there, nor does it respond to pings. When I examined the log after one of these lockups, I found "silence" during the period of time it was locked up, as if the CPU simply halted.

This issue was happening on the firmware that came with the unit, and continued after I updated to the latest, current firmware.

I'm wondering if the RT-AC68U has issues with overheating internally. At any rate, this one is going back since I have a 90-day refurb warranty -- but I'm wondering if brand new units are having similar issues. I would rather get an 802.11ac unit from a different manufacturer, if so.

Update: This evening I have the windows open and it's about 72°F (22°C) where my RT-AC68U is located. It has been running fine for over 12 hours.
