I'll consider it. I haven't tried one yet in our current configuration, so I'll need to at least test one bought locally.

Except I can't get the 900Mbps download speeds on my 2008 MacPro for some reason, just my 2013 MacBook Pro. Both have SSDs for the main drive, and gigabit ethernet connections. Both tested on the same port with the same Cat6 cable, but this MacPro just gets around 600Mbps down.

That's odd - even my old 2006 20 inch iMac (32-bit Core Duo) on Snow Leopard can do 900Mbps on the LAN... wonder what's going on with that Mac Pro, as it should be good to go on the GigE side...

weird...

Turns out it was just the browser based speed tests, I installed the client Speedtest software and it gets the 900+ speeds.

For bandwidth testing, I've found iperf to be the best because of potential issues like this.

How do you use iperf to test an internet connection? I've seen it used on a network, from internal server to server or PC. But not from a PC client to some internet destination? I'll look it up on Google and see what I can find.

You use it the same way you would use it locally except that your client is on the Internet. This only tests your upload bandwidth as I haven't found a public iperf server that supports round trip testing. The server I use is at iperf.gatech.edu

Sorry about the delayed reply. Best buy had a sale so I picked up a new one for around your price.

But I have another install that needs a 6190. You still have yours for sale?

Yes I do. PM me and we can discuss the sale details, I'll get you more information.

Obviously if he wants to buy Intel Puma 5/6/7's we should oblige him. I will post this over on DSLR as we have several thousand people who might want to offload theirs.

For anyone looking for quick info on the Puma 5/6/7 issues its all in one place now. http://badmodems.com/

im also maintaining a list of affected devices http://badmodems.com/Forum/app.php/badmodems this list was used in this news story, http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/08/09/intel_puma_modem_woes/

Nice. Why does no one want me to sell this modem? This is like going up to someone's garage sale and standing at the curb saying everything I'm trying to sell is junk and doesn't work, lol. Thank you for being so nice. You could at least PM the guy and tell him not to buy it so I don't see it. Jeez. I never had issues with this modem, so I don't get why people hijack my FS thread to bash it?

I've run the dslr puma test and ours from bestbuy passes fine. But the key is to have ZERO traffic on your network. I think this is where a lot of people are getting bad results.

If there were that many REAL issues with these, I could easily see Best Buy stop carrying them.

The modem itself has gotten a bad name for sure, but I think a lot of it is hype after using one in person and testing it out.

Why does no one want me to sell this modem?

Because it's defective from the factory. Arris has lawsuits over the 6190. Arris knows and knew it was defective yet kept putting them out.

FWIW - there's a push on the firmware for those devices - supposedly it fixes some of the past concerns as well as the DoS vulns on that chipset.

If one has a Puma6 based modem, check with the provider - DSLReports forums, many of the providers do have at least an informal presence there, and can do one-off upgrades of the firmware.

Not saying the update fixes everything...

Well I sold it long ago.

And I bought it and it has been running like a champ. If there were any real issue, I'd definitely see it as both ends of my remote connection has these modems and I'm on remote desktop all day where even a slight delay in latency is noticeable.

I think the issue has been blown out of proportion by at least an order of magnitude or the complaints from dissatisfied users would have made retailers pull them from shelves.
