Gaming on the AX86U is experiencing lag/stuttering.

My RT-AX86U is running the latest firmware,388.11. Previously, with my 200Mbps down / 30Mbps up broadband, enabling Adaptive QoS (AQoS) kept everything stable, including gaming. After upgrading to 500Mbps down / 40Mbps up, whenever someone downloads something (whether from Steam or a mobile app), the game experiences severe packet loss. I have to manually limit the bandwidth back to 200Mbps to make it run smoothly.
Doesn't Adaptive QoS (AQoS) still support hardware acceleration? Is it a bug, or is there some other issue? Could it be that the performance of the AX86U is inadequate?

Your router is capable enough for almost anything on 500Mbps ISP line. Adaptive QoS is Asuswrt feature, nothing to do with Asuswrt-Merlin. It's whatever came with the GPL from ASUS. You latency is really high. If your gaming PC/Console is not Ethernet connected - your testing is not valid. It can be environment change affecting Wi-Fi. Test wired only, no QoS and all Trend Micro components disabled. Withdraw the data sharing agreement, reboot. This is the perhaps the best configuration for gaming. Good luck!

Check the modem stats as well. Sometimes after plan upgrade the errors and corrections rate increase. Depends on the connection quality - cable length and condition. You perhaps have DOCSIS 3.1 modem.
