Is there any benefit to getting an independent switch, say netgear GS108, or using my router's (netgear WNDR3700) built in switch? Any performance benefits? What are you recommendations?

There would be no benefit. Gigabit performance is usually limited by clients (OS, NIC design, bus interface), not the switch.
