New Around Here
Hi,

I am new here so be gentle please... (long time reader / 1st time poster)

Can somebody offer me some advice . I am in need of a new router (with wireless for the wifey) for home/soho/dev purposes.

I currently have a multi box solution, but my other half has decided these boxes are ugly/unsightly/noisy and must go. I am looking to consolidate multiple pieces of kit to a 1 box solution if possible (I really dont think it is).

After much thought I have decided my priorities are pretty basic, being mainly Gigabit LAN/wireless N and then if possible VPN followed by VLAN and trunking.

My needs are as follows in priority order.

1) Gigabit LAN ....
2) Wireless N
3) VPN endpoint
4) VLAN
5) Trunking

4 and 5 are like to haves.

I dont want a noisy 1U rack mounted procurve or such. This is for home useage mainly to test/develop on a ESX environment and occassionaly plug in servers for testing etc.

I am happy to accept a minimum of 4 LAN ports.

And last but not least I cannot afford a massive amount of money, max £200.

PS Am not expecting miracles, so wont be suprised if you all just laugh and say no way for this amount of money.

PPS. Performance is not a major priority, functionality is ...

I would separate the Gigabit switch from the router to keep heat down and improve reliability. You'd also be able to get your trunking and VLAN capability in an inexpensive smart switch like the NETGEAR GS108T.

The VPN endpoint requirement narrows your choices a lot. You'll tend to overpay for N capability because these are considered "business class" routers and priced accordingly.

But you might have a look at the Draytek 2920n. Might be above your budget. But you could go for the wired-only 2920 version and pick up a cheapie N router and convert to an AP.
