Help with flashing DDWRT!

netmagician

New Around Here
As the topic reads I need a few instructions on flashing DD-WRT on my AC66R(same as AC66U I am told, the official firmware downloads say that too, and the IC ID on the box is AC66U)

I already found the version needed to be installed on the router through the tool on dd-wrt.com but I am unable to find instructions on flashing.

Please help me out.

Thanks in advance

there the same router;

Good luck

yes i know that.

What I dont know is how to install DD-WRT on that router.

There is no DD-WRT wiki for the AC66U, but the process is the same as the N66U. I can vouch for it, as I tried DD-WRT on my AC-66R for a while to diagnose a problem with the 2.4Ghz radios.

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N66U

Basically;

1) Download the .TRX file from http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database (enter AC66U and it will show you the file)
2) Reset the AC66U to ASUS factory / NVRAM defaults through the GUI (under the 'administration' - 'restore/save/upload' tab)
3) Upload the TRX file you downloaded from (1) (under the 'administration' - 'Firmware Upgrade' tab)
4) Wait (could take a while - 5 mins maybe). The router should reboot itself when completed.
5) Login to DD-WRT interface and reset factory defaults again
6) Wait for this last reboot, and then start entering your configs (starting with the admin user/passwd info)

FWIW - Going back to ASUS from DD-WRT is slightly more complex (best to use the ASUS recovery util on the CD you got with the router, or you have to start manually tftp-ing files around).

There is a problem with the 2.4Ghz radios?

I basically need to setup WDS, between the AC66R and the ADSL wifi router.

And setting up wds with the AC66R is very confusing.

Is there any other firmware thats better than DD-wrt and offers a simpler way to setup WDS?

No , sorry - meant *I* was having a problem, not the router / firmware.

WDS is pretty standard across all the firmware versions, and in fact with DD-WRT and all the exposed options, its probably a little more intimidating.
Here is the ASUS doc on it - the key is to get the AP mode and the remote station correct.
