how to change "disk name"

the usb 3.0 disk name field does not change from "disk name." it used to work several fw releases back. not sure what i need to do.

It does work in my rt-ax88u with Merlin 384.16 b1 which I understand is based on GPL 384.7977 (or its binary blobs from it at least). I have 2 drives, one is ext2 and the other is ntfs. In both cases I can see the drive assigned name (not the label) under 'disk name'.

You cannot change the disk name (descriptor) in the network map because it comes from the usb microcontroller and is used to display the usb device model. Usually only usb device manufacturers can change it using special tools.

But not showing any names is another issue. the "disk name" may indicate that the router cannot read the descriptor from your usb device. there may be a issue with the router's usb driver or the usb device itself.

You are right. It is the controller assigned name and not the label that is shown. I am editing my previous post to avoid future confusion.

well, while using 45717, the disk name was still "disk name" but i was able to play vids, tunes, etc on my smart tv and av receiver. now nothing! i've looked at all my settings and the only change was enabling IGMP Snooping. that should not have made a difference.

i am royally stuck, folks if any one has any thoughts. if not, it's back to 45717 again and hoping for the best.

It doesn't matter what name (or lack of name) it says on that button. The important thing is whether the disk is mounted and what the path name is.

If you're using DLNA go to USB Application > Media Server > Media Server Path Setting and check that you can still browse to path you have set there. Do the same for the Samba path.

If your device doesn't have a volume label it will be called something like /dev/sda1. Sometimes this can change randomly to /dev/sdb1 (or similar) which means that any paths you have configured will no longer be valid.

ok, i'm seeing "/mnt/my nas name/my vids" on the media server tab and under the media server dir. now on the samba tab, i'm seeing "my nas name" and a "3" for workgroup. i suspect that workgroup is meaningless.

interesting that u mentioned /dev/sda1... casue that seems familiar but with this 86u, it's seems like a mount command ('mnt/). keep in mind my win devices see all the nas directories fine after i provide server name and pswd and they can execute after well, server name and pswd. could that be the key? never had to do that before! geez, this is so weird. still, thanks.

F I X E D !!

so on a whim, i decided to do a disk scan via the asus gui. surprisingly, it found a few errors. so i rescanned to make sure they were corrected and they were. did nothing else except try once more to see if a device would pick it up and YES, my stuff showed up! happy, happy.
